The nursery is running at full steam as vines are packed, loaded and dispatched to producers across the country.

There’s a lot to keep track of at this stage. The correct graft combinations, quantities and labelling all need to be checked before each order leaves the nursery. We’re proud of the team keeping everything moving.

Next stop for these new kids on the block: the vineyard. 🍇

Our table grape marketer, Gerhardt van Bosch, recently spent a few days in California attending field days and industry visits hosted by Grapa Global, BLOOM FRESH™ and Sun World International, LLC. 🍇🇺🇸

The visits gave him the opportunity to see varieties first-hand, taste the fruit and get a closer look at the breeding and development behind new table grape varieties.

Just as valuable were the conversations with growers, breeders and other industry role players, and the opportunity to see the table grape industry from a different perspective.

For Voor-Groenberg, visits like these are important. Seeing new varieties in the field, and understanding the thinking behind their development, gives us a broader perspective when considering their potential relevance to South African growers, growing conditions and markets.

A big thank you to the teams at Grapa Global , BLOOM FRESH™ and Sun World International, LLC. for sharing their time, knowledge and experience.

On Tuesday, 28 July, we welcomed industry leaders and managers from the Northern Cape to Voor-Groenberg Nursery.

The group received a hands-on look at our grafting process, our role as a registered Plant Improvement Organisation, and the cultivars and rootstocks we work with across the w**e, table grape and raisin sectors.

A special thank you to Rachel Kriel from Plant SA for sharing valuable insight into the legislation and certification requirements that support the production of quality planting material.

Watch as Kemmy Vorster, Millie Adams, Runwany Job and Zenovia Isaacs share what they learned and what stood out to them during the visit.

At the end of June, the Plant SA team visited Our Nursery for the annual winter inspection.

Plant SA conducts three nursery inspections each year: summer, autumn and winter. The winter inspection takes place once the vines have been lifted and graded by our nursery team.

At this stage, the vines are nearly ready for certification and storage, but first they must pass a final physical inspection.

The Plant SA team assesses root development, shoot growth and the formation of the graft union to confirm that each vine meets the requirements of the South African Plant Certification Scheme for Vitis.

This inspection is an important final step in confirming that the vines leaving our nursery meet the certified standards growers depend on.

Watch the full video as Jandré takes us through Plant SA’s winter inspection checklist.

What sets a nursery apart is not only the vines it produces, but the thinking, care, and responsibility behind them.

For over 36 years, we have dedicated ourselves to producing high quality grafted grapevines that support growers from the ground up. By combining proven techniques like long whip grafting and hot water treatment with ongoing innovation, we focus on giving growers a stronger start.

Our work also goes beyond the nursery. From cultivar selection to soil health guidance, we aim to support decisions that are better suited to each vineyard’s long term success.

What Gerhardt said! 😎

09/04/2026

The 2025/2026 table grape season was one of those seasons. In some regions, harvesting started slightly earlier due to warmer conditions, while wind-related port delays and export pressure once again reminded the industry how quickly circumstances can shift.

Seasons like this make good planting material stand out.

Not because planting material determines everything, but because it remains one of the most important early decisions a grower makes. High-quality planting material lays the foundation for vineyard uniformity, health and long-term performance.

At Voor-Groenberg Nurseries, that foundation is what we focus on every day.
