This baby shower set of an 8” three layer marble cake and 6 dozen matching cupcakes was so much fun to create! I was given a picture of a yellow cake with greenery around the top and bottom and dried flowers on it, then told to use buttercream florals and incorporate wildlife like a bear, fox, and rabbit. My mind automatically went to the old time nostalgic style cartoons of animals walking through the woods wearing shirts and carrying nap sacks, and I knew with conviction that this was how I wanted to incorporate the wildlife!
The cake, itself took me several hours at the end of my night Friday, finally leaving the bakery just shy of 3 am, with the white chocolate fox and 6 dozen cupcakes left to do when I came in the next (or… the same?) morning.
I started the cupcakes bright and early around 7:30 with the chocolate bunnies that I knew I wanted to incorporate somehow, then made my frosting and started with the easy design - one dozen chocolate and one dozen vanilla with green leaves and a cluster of flowers in the center. As I was creating them, my mind was playing on the other two sets, how to incorporate the bunnies and the little buggies. I knew I was going to use some grass in the buggie set. It should be simple - grass and leaves, maybe a few little dainty flowers like the ones hanging down on vines in the cake and a few bugs buzzing around should be cute. But what about the bunnies? Leaves would drown out the bunnies. Icing and bunnies would bring focus straight to the bunnies, but how boring! Grass? Fitting. But that would just be stupid.
As I sat decorating the floral cupcakes in the “clear spot” on my work table that was mostly cluttered with bowls of base color frosting, piles of frosting bags, specialty tips, a tray of white chocolate bunnies, candy bugs and other necessities, a soft but mischievous giggle made its way from my mind out my mouth to pierce the silence of the kitchen. What if… I made the bunny set an even closer match to the cake? Yellow background, grass, and the bunny would be too cute! Oh!!!! ANNNNND - ribbon icing for the yellow to match the rustic swirl of the cake! AND I COULD ADD A LITTLE BEEEEE!!!! How adorable would that be!!! Love it!!!! That’s what I’m going to do!
And so it was done. And I was super excited and super happy and so were the customers. And now you know what goes on in my mind as I’m decorating custom orders. (At least this time!)
