It’s our wine of the week! It can seem a little strange as one surveys Europe to see how underrepresented Greece is for notable winemaking. The land of the ancient mad wine god Dionysus, how can it be!? Many factors have contributed to the country’s late entry into modern viniculture, but as any good materialist historian would tell you, start with the land itself. Much of Greece is infertile, and what few good patches of rich soil there are, get reserved for safer, and more profitable crops. It’s terrain and weather patterns are also quite challenging. Yet for all the difficulties, some really exquisite wine is being produced in Greece, and the government is finally interested in growing an export market. The vile Retsina is no longer the wine we associate with this wonderful ancient land that we all owe so much to.

Some of the best quality red wines are made in the northern Macedonia region, which is a continuum of the Balkan land mass. Here a rather finicky red grape called Xinomavro (translation is “acid black”) dominates. Easily susceptible to mildew, it very much wants Goldilocks conditions of just right humidity in both air and soil. It doesn’t love too much sun, and the fact that it is late ripening also exposes it to the threat of autumn rain. Viticulturist Makis Mavridis and oenologist Angelos Iatridis have made this difficult grape their passion project. Based in Amyndeon in the northwest, they began their winery Alpha Estate in 1997. This weeks wine, the Alpha Estate Xinomavro Single Vineyard “Hedgehog” sees 8 months on the lees with regular stirring and then 12 months in French oak, followed by 12 months in bottle. We like it with a bit of a chill. Enjoy it on-premise for $53.- or 50% off to-go!

It’s our wine of the week! Of course white wine should be enjoyed year round in all climates, but on a hundred and five degree June day, a cold white glass can gain a transcendency like nothing else. This week’s wine takes us to the remote Atlantic region of Galicia. Ruled by Celtic tribes for much of its history. Gallego, the language that is spoken there, is closer to it’s southern neighbor Portuguese than it is to Spanish. Here white wine is king and Albariño the most celebrated grape. A thick skinned varietal, it is very resistant to mildew which is a constant threat given the immense coastal rainfall of the region. The river Miño marks the border with Portugal, and just next to it is the Rías Baixas sub zone of O Rosal where our wine comes from.

Rías Baixas was known for centuries for its small family plots and non-commercial production focused on village consumption. There was almost no presence of this region’s wine in the rest of Spain, never mind internationally. This began to change in the 1980’s, and one of the many important winemakers in this wave was Santiago Ruiz, who in his seventies (!!!) decided he wanted to make wine professionally. His daughter Rosa now oversees operations and carries his spirit forward. Our wine of the week is predominantly Albariño, blended with 4 other indigenous varietals: 11% Loureiro, 5% Treixadura, 4% Godello, 4% Caiño Blanco. Each varietal undergoes cryo-maceration, and then is fermented separately in stainless, finally seeing about 4 months of lees contact. This is what the doctor ordered for a hot Tucson day. But don’t take our word for it! Next Tuesday the 23rd, come and see us from 4:30 -6:30 and taste it along with 2 other whites that we and our friends Johnson Brothers Maverick of Arizona think are particularly suited for combatting the dog days. You can enjoy it for $46.- on premise, or 40% off to-go!
