It’s our w**e of the week! Discovering a terrific w**e at a large tasting is always a moment that deserves some extra scrutiny and self-skepticism. Was the w**e very early in the lineup when one’s palate perhaps wasn’t quite calibrated? Or did it come late when one’s tongue was completely blown out and enough alcohol had been absorbed, despite the spitting, to start thinking things were tasting really amazing? One always has to do some detective work ex post facto. At a recent tasting in Phoenix courtesy of the terrific The Source Imports, one w**e that had our group unanimously smiling was a delicious Verdicchio at that sweet spot of about a quarter of the way through the lineup of around 50ish w**es. One of the classic great white grapes of Italy, it nonetheless often flies under the radar. Native to the Marche region of central Italy, terminating on the Adriatic coast. We’ve always found it to have a robust spine of acid, but at it’s more complex it will develop considerable texture, complexity, and even an ability to lay down for a decade.

Borgo Paglianetto is situated in Matelica, one of the Marche’s two great Verdicchio appellations, situated inland among the Apennine mountains. Unlike the coastal vineyards of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, Matelica sits in a cooler, more continental valley, with considerable diurnal flux. Historically, it tended to be the appellation that one also found greater complexity in (less true now, but this bottle reminds us how good Matelica can be, with its Jurassic limestone soil that’s nearly identical to Burgundy). The result is a Verdicchio that tends toward greater freshness, acidity, with wonderful notes of lemon, cantaloupe, and a slightly sandy grain. Enjoy a bottle on premise for $45.- or 40% off to-go!

I feel like I’m always finding new interests but recently something outside of work I am passionate about is collecting Pokémon cards. I recently went through a bunch of my old childhood cards and I’m working on completing some of the sets I started collecting almost 20 years ago.

I’m currently making my way through the Berserk manga series! I just finished Volume 9.

It’s our w**e of the week! You may have bumped into the person who is highly seasonal with their taste in w**e. Refreshing whites and rosés for the heat of spring and summer, savory reds for fall and winter. We disagree on principal with such a set of restrictions, but we also kind of get it. A question for such a person might then be, where does orange w**e fit into the calendar? It would be difficult to argue that autumn, the great season of poets, reflection, and the wisdom of advancing age and partial decay, doesn’t somehow lend itself to a lighter w**e that still carries tannic bite. The practice is ancient, with particularly deep roots in Georgia, where amber w**e has been made in qvevris for thousands of years. So it also feels right in the pocket for spooky season, a living revenant, and of course it’s the right color.

This week we’re looking at the Glup Naranjo from Longaví, a project founded by Chilean w**emaker Julio Bouchon and French w**emaker David Nieuwoudt. The name Glup is a lighthearted nod to the sound of swallowing a good gulp of w**e. Longaví works with old vineyards and traditional varieties in Chile, particularly Pais, with an emphasis on expressive fruit and a relatively light hand in the cellar. The Glup Naranjo is an orange w**e made from 100% Moscatel, with skin contact bringing a little grip and structure to the w**e alongside its fresh fruit character. But for an “orange” this lands on the much lighter touch of the spectrum, with a pretty light hue and highly aromatic nose of white flowers. Come and enjoy a bottle for $46.- or 50% off to go!
