Tomorrow is opening day for Sugar Creek Slavic Festival 2026. Today, we're taking a step back in time for Throwback Thursday with a photo from 1989 - year five of our event.
Pictured is Mark O'Renick with his mother Beverly. Mark's family is of Slovak and Russyn descent coming to the USA in the mid-1890s. The family name, Orenic, was altered somewhere along the way. Mark and his sister Debbie, are part of the amazing board that helps plan Slavic Fest each year. We're so grateful for all of their efforts.
Slavic Festival started in 1985, building on the foundation set by the St. Cyril's Parish Folk Festival, where many of the families helping out today went to church. The church was built by Slavic immigrants who came to work in Sugar Creek and nearby communities in oil refineries, steel mills and more.
Much like life, the journey of growth and change that our festival has experienced over the last 40 years has been marked with sadness and joy. We've lost many of our loved along the way. But we've gained new friends, fans and volunteers to help keep tradition alive.
Mark will probably tell you he's grown a few pounds too over the years. Who can blame him - the food at Slavic Fest is sooooo good!
We hope to see you this Friday and Saturday to help us celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Sugar Creek Slavic Festival. Visit slavicfest.com for all of the details.
We are after all.
