The more you know…

🍸 THE HISTORY OF THE LAST WORD

The Last Word is one of those cocktails that almost disappeared forever.

Its story begins around 1915 at the Detroit Athletic Club, where it became associated with vaudeville performer Frank Fogarty, known as “The Dublin Minstrel.” The cocktail eventually made its way into print in Ted Saucier’s 1951 cocktail book, Bottoms Up!

And then… it essentially vanished.

For decades, The Last Word was largely forgotten until the early 2000s, when Seattle bartender Murray Stenson discovered the old recipe in Saucier’s book and began serving it at the Zig Zag Café.

Bartenders took notice, word spread, and a cocktail that had been nearly forgotten for half a century suddenly became a star of the modern cocktail revival.

Today, The Last Word is considered a modern classic despite being more than a century old.

Proof that sometimes the best cocktails don’t need to be reinvented. They just need to be rediscovered.
