SANTA ANA PUEBLO — PGA Hope (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) will be putting together an event at Santa Ana Golf Club on Nov. 16. The event, which is free to the public, recognizes all PGA Hope participants and programs in the Sun Country program.

Established in 1974, the Sun Country PGA Section represents New Mexico and El Paso County, Texas, as one of 41 PGA of America Sections. They host HOPE clinics in Rio Rancho, Albuquerque, Santa Ana, Farmington, Las Cruces, El Paso and other locations.

“We’re recognizing all of our veterans and active-duty military members for a free day of golf to celebrate their accomplishment,” Jose Montoya, business development manager at Sun Country Golf House in Rio Rancho, said.

Each team will represent their respective PGA HOPE program. The teams will play with PGA of America golf professionals, their instructor from that HOPE program and other HOPE teams in a friendly match.

“This is all about recognizing and serving those who have served us,” Montoya said. “They are the ones that did the most. It’s really just a cool, unique opportunity to showcase them. The program itself, HOPE, means a lot to people. I’ll talk with different veterans and active duty who have participated in the program; some didn’t know a thing or two about golf. Some have played golf fairly regularly, but getting that one-on-one golf instruction has really helped, and they can do that in community. I think a lot of military members can get behind the idea of community, where that’s really key and important to them in their lifestyle.”

PGA Hope is the flagship military program of the PGA of America REACH Foundation, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. The program introduces golf to veterans and active-duty military members to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.

Since its inception in 2015, PGA HOPE has served more than 71,000 veterans and active-duty military members. The Sun Country chapter serves more than 300 each year and continues to grow.
