The day after the guns fell silent, Claude Monet picked up a pen. On November 12, 1918, one day after the Armistice ended World War I, he wrote to his close friend Georges Clemenceau, then Prime Minister of France, offering to give the nation two of his massive water lily panels "to honour the victory and peace."

Clemenceau had a bigger idea. Since the panels were part of a larger series, he convinced Monet to donate the whole cycle instead, eight panels in total. Monet agreed in 1922, on one condition: he got to keep the paintings until he died, and he insisted on designing the room himself.

He got his wish, barely. Monet died in December 1926, just months before his Water Lilies opened to the public. Two specially built oval rooms, curved to remove every straight line and corner, opened at the Musée de l'Orangerie in May 1927, exactly as he had envisioned them.

The setting was deliberate. No sharp edges, no beginning, no end, just water, light, and reflection wrapping around the viewer in what critic André Masson would later call "the Sistine Chapel of Impressionism."

An artist who spent 30 years painting the same pond ended up giving France one of the most quietly powerful war memorials it has ever built, not from stone or bronze, but from water lilies.
