Rittenhouse Rye Private Single Barrel: Big Cat Trick 🥃 🐈

In the world of rye whiskey, there are very few bottles more iconic than Rittenhouse. First released in 1934 by the Continental Distilling Corporation of Philadelphia and named for Rittenhouse Square, Rittenhouse was perhaps “the” Pennsylvania rye for many decades, coming out of prohibition at full steam and making Continental the fifth biggest whiskey producer in the US. While the brand grew over the years, adding the bottled-in-bond distinction in 1939, the brand began to change hands in 1979, and home states in 1986 relocating to Kentucky where it was eventually picked up by its longtime and current owners Heaven Hill in 1993.

While the recipe has almost certainly changed since the original days of Rittenhouse, some consider that the current recipe of 51% rye, 37% corn, and 12% malted barley might not have been too far off from its initial one. Being bottled-in-bond means that the whiskeys in the blend are all at least 4 years old and bottled at 100 proof.

But here’s the fun part, late last year we bought a barrel of Rittenhouse that was nearly 7 years old, our third barrel pick of this rye, and earlier this year we received all 20-something cases of it, which we pour everyday in our Big Cats’ Old Fashioned. Today we wanted to show it off in its purest form, and at the low price of $5 per ounce. Come check out our rye!

IW Harper Cabernet Cask

For all the history nerds who might be following along, this is a fun one! IW Harper was a brand started by Isaac Wolfe (IW) Bernheim and his company Bernheim Brothers and Co., which started bottling and selling sourced bourbon in 1872, a practice that is well tread territory in modern times. IW Harper bourbon being the main product (Harper seemingly being an invented name for marketing), the Bernheim brothers won accolades for their products and produced all the way through prohibition, being one of the few companies allowed to sell medicinal whiskey. Fun fact, it was these same brothers for which Bernheim Wheat Whiskey and Heaven Hill’s Bernheim distillery is named. In 1937, less than a decade after the end of “the noble experiment”, Bernheim sold the company to Schenley Distilling Corporation, one of the four biggest companies in liquor at the time. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions the brand floated around eventually being owned by United Distillers, who then became Diageo. The IW Harper line had been growing in popularity in overseas markets, specifically Japan, and with American interest in aged spirits waning from the 1970’s onward, the brand went export only, completely disappearing from liquor shelves in the US. It enjoyed a good run on the other side of the Pacific before finally being put to bed.

In 2015, with a renewed interest in bourbon, Diageo revived the brand, this time with juice coming from their own Stitzel-Weller distillery, a historic distillery in its own right. This current iteration of IW Harper enjoys updated branding including the “Bowing Man” that once graced all of their advertisements. This Cabernet cask-finished bourbon will appeal to folks who enjoy Angel’s Envy and other whiskeys that see time in a red wine barrel, and is certainly a steal at $5 per ounce!

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit 🥃 🦃

We’ve talked at length a couple times by now about Wild Turkey and the dynamic duo of father / son master distillers, Jimmy and Eddie Russell, the former of which celebrated his 70th year in the drivers seat! This brand was a standard offering for years until somewhat recently when it became their default barrel pick brand.

Kentucky Spirit is a 101 proof single barrel bourbon that is built on their signature 75% Corn, 13% Rye, 12% Malted Barley mashbill. While it doesn’t carry an age statement, though it’s been said to be at least 8 years old in the past.

Pop by tonight and raise a glass of Kentucky Spirit to ole Jimmy for the low price of $5 per ounce!
