At our entrance you are greeted by this piece of artwork that, I believe, captures the essence and spirit of our little Chef-centric speakeasy. And it almost did not exist…

In full transparency, I about had a cow and two goats when I learned how much the artwork would cost. 💰 🐐 We moved forward anyway because I think the boss, aka my loving wife, had already made a command decision and rightfully so. She was right and the space just wouldn’t be the same without it.

Smokey, elusive, a little bit secretive- but obviously enjoyable and sophisticated- yeah, it fits well.

This morning when I woke up for my run 🏃 and as I was getting ready, I noticed I had a poor review notification awaiting me. I begrudgingly clicked on it in the hopes that my day would start off bright and unfortunately we had missed the mark. I was saddened to find that we had let a guest down and didn’t deliver on what we are fully capable of and frankly do many times a day. I thanked the guest for their feedback and went out the door to do my run thinking that I would follow up with the team on the review and what we could do better.

It was chilly and dark 🌙 as I heading down the road and one thing the guest said kept me thinking … that our atmosphere was “basic” and “nothing to write home about.” This actually stung a bit and after 13 years my skin has grown thick - but this one I’ve been pondering 🤔 as I know you can now tell.

Our renovation was exceedingly long, detailed and expensive. Expensive to the point that I dread failure, as I failed this guest, because I don’t want to have wasted monies that I could have put directly towards our family and their needs. Hand plastered walls, months and months of painstaking work, self-selected every stone, tile, paint color - everything. Hours, days, weeks, months and over a year. And frankly, it is something to write home about.

This is Barley & Smoke. It is independently owned and operated by Matt, Kris and Mike. We are Peoria residents and our children attend Peoria Schools - they were all raised right here. This is our second home and we very much welcome you and appreciate our community. We won’t always get it 100% all the time - but we will certainly pour every ounce of our passion into every single guest and always strive for that 💯. Cheers 🥂

About an hour before service, we turn up the lights and set the tables. We do final touches, turn on the music and check and recheck all the details. We review our reservations, go over birthday celebrations, anniversaries and all the special requests. We taste any specials, polish the last bit of silverware and check the bathrooms. Tonight we will welcome 53 guests with reservations and several more walk-ins and we very much appreciate each and every one of you. Cuisine by we are Barley & Smoke
