We've got company! 😯 THIS Saturday, we are hosts to a group of Donauschwaben dancers visiting from Hungary. 🇩🇪 🇭🇺

In order to understand why our German roots connect to a group in Hungary, it is important to know the significance of our specific German heritage. "Donauschwaben" are ethnic Germans who emigrated down the Danube (hence the name) River Basin in southeastern Europe in the 18th century.

However, acts of totalitarian aggression fractured the population by way of intense ethnic persecution, labor camp deportations, and forced expulsions by the shifting regional regimes. Though many perished, a multitude still found the opportunity to flee or migrate to North America, especially the Great Lakes region, where they established tight-knit cultural clubs to preserve their language and traditions.

Conversely, those that stayed in their cultural homelands also continued practicing their language and traditions in what is mostly the former Yugoslavia and present day Hungary or they assimilated back into Germanic cultures of western Europe. Thus, there still exist German-rooted populations in pockets outside Germany and far beyond Europe.

Our deepest appreciation and thanks to everyone who made the 2026 Sommer Oktoberfest 🔹🔹amazing! Volunteers, Staff, Performers, Vendors, FD/PD, and, of course, our fantastic supporters all collaborated to ensure successful fundraising 💸 for Donauschwaben's German-American Cultural Center • Cleveland & which also means . 🙏 🇩🇪

We especially wanted to thank everyone for their phenomenal cooperation during Saturday evening's Tornado Drill and shelter in place. A club member and volunteer who is a former Cleveland Fire Department Chief and Administrator said that it was one of the best executions of such a maneuver he had ever seen. Wow!

The conclusion of Sommer Oktoberfest means that we are back to normal hours...unless otherwise stated so please keep your eyes on our feed 👀
