Overhaul California's Beverage Container Recycling Program

Overhaul California's Beverage Container Recycling Program To ensure our State's green future, California needs to adopt a demand-based recycling program that mandates the use of re-usable containers now!

Producer responsibility is the key. Join the fight! Under the current program, recycling centers are closing and the State cannot achieve its zero waste goals. Like other states, California has a citizen-funded beverage container deposit system which provides an incentive for the public to recycle. Upon the purchase of their favorite soda or beer, consumers pay a deposit to the store. The store re

mits the deposits to the State’s recycling fund. Since recyclables also have an intrinsic scrap value, the deposit augments the cash value for those who redeem their used beverage containers at the State’s recycling centers. If a compelling interest exists for the State to catalyze public participation in recycling, we propose an alternative to the deposit/redemption program. Among other benefits which this page will advertise, our alternative is greener and presents a more sustainable method to inflate the value of beverage containers. Supporters of this page suggest phasing-out the deposit/redemption system in favor of a demand-inspiring program by imposing minimum content requirements on manufacturers who make and sell products from recyclables.
