When you’re hoping it’s spring, but it’s definitely not. But it’s Friday, and you want something a little extra.

We opened this for the members today. Barbera from one of the great old-school Barolo producers. Old-vine Barbera sourced from the Scudetto vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, Giuseppe Mascarello’s Barbera d’Alba manages to be concentrated while maintaining nuance and elegance.

An exuberant combination of contrasting flavors and notes; red sour cherry and sweet plum with hints of violets and savory herbs in the follow-through.

Bookending my week with Caparsa.

Started with a 9 a.m. vineyard visit on Monday morning and sharing this Chianti Classico Riserva with the shop members this evening.

The driving force behind Caparsa is Paolo Cianferoni, who took over the estate in 1982. It was his father who purchased the estate in the 1960s and began propagating the vines. Paolo views the estate as a living organism, where over sixty percent of the land is dedicated to biodiversity, assuring a vibrant mix of flora and fauna.

Located in Radda, in the heart of Chianti Classico, the vineyards are 450-500 meters above sea level, and somewhat unusually, with north/northwest exposure. Perhaps this, the surrounding forests, and not to mention the classic mix of galestro and alberese soils, give Caparsa’s Chiantis a distinctive acidic lift that allows for great potential for aging. Cianferoni is finishing the replanting of the vineyards through massale selection, maintaining the unique genetic diversity of the estate.

The Doccio a Matteo Chianti Classico Riserva is the highest vineyard site on the estate and abuts a natural spring that continuously flows through the vineyard. The name of the vineyard is somewhat fitting. Doccia means shower in Italian; however, even the winemaker doesn’t know who Matteo was.

A floral nose, red and stewed cherry, lifted acidity, with cigar box undertones. Manages to be both elegant and rustic. This wine!
