recognizing pork producers and the swine industry. Iowa leads the nation in pork production, so it’s not surprising that our most-popular pizza is the Saucey Pig, featuring savory pulled pork, cool cream cheese, and tangy barbecue sauce. Meriden patriarch George Washington Prescott was born on this day in 1828. In 1873, George left his home in New Hampshire to travel west and join his son Frank in the new town of Hazard, Iowa. The two of them operated a general store on the site that is now the Hazard Tavern.

George soon became one of the community’s most prominent businessmen and civic leaders. He is also believed to be behind the petition to change the town’s name from Hazard to Meriden.

In addition to operating the general store, George established a grain elevator, hotel, construction company, and bank. He also served as Meriden’s mayor for many years.

George owned land west of town and donated a portion of it for the town cemetery. It remains his final resting place, alongside his wife, Harriet.

Nearly 200 years after his birth, George’s mark on Meriden can still be seen—and we’re proud that the Hazard Tavern sits on a piece of that history.
