Throwback Thursday: Who was Harry?

In February 1937, the Plaindealer reported that Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hepp of Chicago had bought the Riverside House, our building. Mr. Hepp was "manager of Harry's New York bar, in Chicago."

That June he hosted about 100 invited guests at the "New Riverside Hotel," with "a bountiful dinner" and a program by professional talent. The paper called him "Charles (Harry) Hepp," and on page 5, "Charlie." It also praised "the Riverside Hotel and Harry's New York Cabaret."

A 1938 court case names Charles J. Hepp as president of Harry's New York Cabaret, Inc., at 400 N. Wabash in Chicago. Was the club named for him, or did he get the nickname from the club? We still don't know.

Does your family have any stories about Harry's?
