On June 1 in military history, notable events range from pivotal naval battles to defining skirmishes in the American Civil War. Three of the most significant occurrences include:

1794 – The Glorious First of June: Fought between the British and French navies, this was the first major fleet action of the French Revolutionary Wars. While Admiral Richard Howe's British fleet defeated the French, the primary strategic objective—protecting a vital U.S. grain convoy bound for France—was successfully achieved.

1813 – "Don't Give Up the Ship": In a brutal 15-minute War of 1812 engagement off the coast of Boston, the British frigate HMS Shannon captured the American frigate USS Chesapeake. Mortally wounded, American Captain James Lawrence gave the famous final order, "Don't give up the ship," creating a lasting motto for the U.S. Navy.

1861 – First Civil War Skirmish: Union and Confederate forces clashed for the first time at Fairfax Court House, Virginia, resulting in early casualties and marking the opening hostilities of the land war.
