A quarter under your pillow felt like hitting the jackpot when you were eight.

The clink of heavy glass bottles in a wooden crate was the sound of a Saturday afternoon worth five cents a pop. We didn't have a special bin for our recycling because we were too busy finding a second life for everything from paper bags to the family toaster. It was a time when broken didn't mean finished, it just meant it was time to get the toolbox out and stay a while.

We didn't need a slogan to teach us about waste because we were raised to respect the things that were built to last.

One menu, one table, and a glass of milk that stayed cold while you tested your luck.

You could sit there with your arms crossed until the streetlights came on, but that plate wasn't changing and neither was Mom's mind. There was no checking the pantry for a backup plan or negotiating for a different choice. We didn't realize it then, but the consistency of that meal was the loudest way they told us we were home.

The kitchen closed when the hand towel was hung up, and you didn't want to be the one left alone with a cold plate.

Being avoided is an answer in itself.

You shouldn’t have to keep reaching for someone who keeps making you feel unwanted. After a while, you stop chasing explanations and simply notice the effort is no longer mutual.

Sometimes the most respectful thing you can do is leave quietly and let the distance stay where they put it.
