OUR CONDOLENCES: Kenosha is mourning the loss of a great man who made a big impact on our community. Michael R. Cholak, Jr. passed away on Thursday, Nov. 7. At one point, Mike owned Captain Mike’s, Uncle Mike’s, Mikey’s, Mike’s Sportsbook, and Mike’s Chicken and Donuts. Words cannot sum up the life of Mike Cholak. But, in the time we enjoyed with him, this is what we knew Mike to be:

An icon in the community. An entrepreneur. A professor. A loving husband and father. Enthusiast. Whisky connoisseur. Advisor and mentor. And great friend.

He provided light in our darkest hour for which we are eternally grateful.

Mike was a genuinely good, and funny man. The world will be a little dimmer without Mike Cholak in it.

Celebrate Mike with us at R'Noggin Brewing Co. on 11/17 for a Sunday Funday in his honor.

I am sure that by now many of you have heard that a good friend and our neighbor here at R’Noggin Brewing, Mike Cholak (owner of Uncle Mike's Highway Pub), passed away late last week. I first met Mike when he was my professor many years ago at the University of Wisconsin Parkside. I may or may not have failed that class, however, Mike as a professor left an impression on me and I never forgot him.

I saw him many times throughout the years but it was not until we moved next door to him and started construction on the brewery that I really got to know him. Mike ended up not just as a neighbor but a friend, a business advisor, and my personal Sunday funday bookie (don’t worry we never traded cash we just kept a tally going - somehow he was always up and I was in the hole).

Technically speaking he was my competition but he supported us unlike anyone else. We had people walking over to see us every week because Mike was bartending next door and sending them to us. I mean who does that? He spent his Wednesday nights calling bingo and coming to R’Noggin in between games to get beer or join a bags game! Speaking of games, some of you may have played a game or two of pickleball at the brewery over the last couple years, well, that was all Mike. He came to me so excited about pickleball that there was no way I couldn’t paint a court.

I could go on and on about the things Mike influenced with me as business owner. I could also go on and on about the relationship he developed with me and many of our customers but I want to end with this…

Mike will never be forgotten, he will always be my friend and a member of the R’Noggin family. I pray for his family during this time and ask, if you are comfortable, to do the same. In order to honor Mike, we will be having a “Sunday Funday” this weekend. What that looks like I don’t know, I just know that it is what he wanted and damn it all if it’s not what we will be doing.

Rest in peace my friend.

If there was ever a Mt Rushmore of Dons, trust me, Mike Cholak is on it with beard flowing. The host of the first-ever KDFFL Draft in the 80s, an early unifying force in Dondom...and that's a fact.
