A sign out front reads "Wurst Place on the Beech," and that self-aware irreverence tells you everything you need to know before walking through the door. Mahuffer's has been a fixture on Gulf Boulevard in Indian Shores since 1969, a deliberately chaotic dive bar built over decades into a labyrinth of mismatched seating, dollar bills stapled to every wall, bras hanging from the ceiling, a ship's bow crashing through an interior wall, and a live iguana guarding the entrance from inside a cage alongside a broken-down motorcycle.

The original owner, a nine-times-married local eccentric who described his own bar as "the backside of paradise," left behind a legacy so outsized that staff believe his ghost still drinks there. A beloved later manager rode a motorcycle in a hotdog suit and inspired 15 loyalty tattoos among regulars and staff.

Ice-cold cheap beer, live classic rock, and one of the most fiercely devoted bar communities on Florida's Gulf Coast round out a place that at least one dive bar critic has called the best in America. Have you been here before? If so, share your experience in the comments below!
