As I make more of these drink videos I’m learning a few things. 1) Johnny’s staff* are really spending a lot of time thinking about monkeys, not sure what that says about them, but its a fact 2) filming two people talking is very difficult to edit and there’s a reason why people don’t do that 3) Dillon (Dillon Carpenter ) gets so nervous about being on camera that he becomes wildly unpredictable on camera with hilarious results. Here’s another video about another drink that we made (this particular one was masterminded by Angel Marie Salas-Lares and Dillon Carpenter and features MARFA SPIRIT CO. Sotol), ENJOY!

This post is ostensibly about Ryan’s cocktail Desiderium, but what I really want to talk about is Jeremy Joe Kronsberg, the writer of Clint Eastwood’s 1978 smash hit Every Which Way But Loose. Born Graeme Joseph Kronsberg in Brooklyn in 1937, he drifted through a variety of blue-collar jobs (teamster, milkman, probation officer) and actively pursued professional body building before writing the unexpected truck driver/orangutan movie starring Clint Eastwood. If you haven’t seen it, Every Which Way But Loose is a totally weird movie. Clint drives a truck with his buddy, a hard-drinking, hard-loving, fist-fighting orangutan named Clyde. The movie was critically panned but a massive commercial success, grossing over $105 million on release. On the success of that, he was hired to write the sequel and then given a chance to write and direct his own movie, 1981’s Going Ape, which, not surprisingly, also featured orangutans. Then he seems to have just retired. He and his wife bought a small mobile home in Malibu where they lived until it burned down in the fires in 2018. He did a lot of body building and mushroom foraging and occasionally taught creative writing classes. And if that isn’t the American dream then I don’t know what is. Also, this is Ryan’s drink. It’s a peanut and banana Old Fashioned, inspired by his love of peanut butter and banana sandwiches with hot honey. On the menu now.

Nick Jude Watt says this drink is “mature, for grown ups” and with an IG handle like that, he is clearly a man who knows a thing or two about maturity. If you are like me and you always like the idea of a Bloody Mary, but then when it comes it feels to close to drinking a cold spicy soup to really be enjoyable, this drink is for you! Delicate tomato and shiso flavors in a refreshing spritz format.

Started filming this video of Trent Lee explaining his new clarified mango and sticky rice foam cocktail when all of a sudden the WELL COLLAPSED FOR NO REASON (maybe it was shocked by Trent’s hot take on milk punches)! No bottles were harmed, but it made for a slightly disjointed Trent, but there is nothing disjoined about Rendezvous with Rama, Trent’s contribution to this month’s menu that combines clarified mango juice, a rum blend of white and agricole rums, mango liqueur, sesame syrup, and a toasted rice foam. It’s so good that the bar is falling apart (or maybe those things are not related).

If you have ever met Dillon Carpenter you might be surprised to learn (as I was) that he HATES being on camera. He’s such a handsome, charming, and outgoing fellow in person, but getting him to explain his cocktail (refreshing summer beet old fashioned) involved serious cajoling and thinly veiled threats as well as actually tying his ankle to the well to keep him from bolting. Even then, he was still trying to get out of it. So enjoy this rare footage of a Dillon in the wild!

Have you ever wondered what Nick Jude Watt (btw Nick, you should really think about changing that handle….) dreams about? Turns out it’s mostly pastry’s from CASAEMA HTX and Trent Lee. Watch more to learn about the importation behind Nick’s cocktail, how he makes it, and why he has a stain on his shirt that I didn’t notice until he pointed it out and said “you are going to focus on my stain aren’t you?”
