Two of the best arguments on this coast, and neither one is settled.

Tacky Jacks started in 1979 as a little bar and grill just off Marina Road in Orange [email protected] — back when Orange Beach was still a fishing village and that's where you went to sit down after a day on the Gulf. George Skipper bought it in 1987 and made it stick. Fort Morgan followed in 2005 and if you've sat at that downstairs bar and looked up, the rafters are hung with hand-painted signs from five bars and restaurants that lived on that same waterfront before it. Gulf Shores opened on the Intracoastal in 2011 . Three rooms, one idea — by land or sea.

Pirates Cove has been sitting on Roberts Bayou in Josephine since about 1935, and it didn't start as a bar at all. It went up as the store for a Civilian Conservation Corps camp cutting the Intracoastal. The name goes back to Raphael Semmes, who is supposed to have tucked ships back in that bayou where nothing bigger could follow him. The Helmuth family bought it in December 1956 and Paul died within weeks of the move, which left Elsa running the place with a teenage son and almost no money coming in. Paul Mueller has had the helm since 1996. Ninety years, same bayou, same dogs, same cheeseburger.

And the bushwackers. The Cove pours enough of them to be the number one independent Malibu account in the country — which, if you've spent a Saturday under that pavilion, tracks.

Which way are you running this weekend, and whose bushwacker gets your vote?

See you on the water, -Thomas Toombs
