We uncorked something truly extraordinary: Eben Sadie’s The Sadie Family Kokerboom 2023, a remarkable South African white w**e from one of the country’s most celebrated w**emakers.

Made predominantly from Sémillon, with a touch of Sémillon Gris, Kokerboom comes from ancient bush vines in the rugged Olifants River region, north of Swartland. These extraordinary old vines produce tiny yields of intensely concentrated fruit, resulting in a w**e of incredible texture, complexity and elegance. Think citrus, stone fruit, subtle herbal notes and a beautiful mineral finish.

And here’s the REALLY tempting part...

A glass of this exceptional w**e would normally set you back at least $79.

The pièce de résistance! Part Two…

As if our extraordinary few hours at Lynch-Bages weren’t enough, there was one final stop on our Bordeaux journey: Château Haut-Batailley.

Anyone who knows me knows I have a serious soft spot for Verso — one of my absolute favorite Bordeaux w**es — so this was always going to be special.

We had already enjoyed Verso 2019 over lunch, but then came the perfect ending: a vertical tasting of Verso 2021, 2022 and 2023, followed by Château Haut-Batailley 2020, 2021 and 2023.

Vintage by vintage. Side by side.

After travelling through Porto, Ribera del Duero, Rioja and Bordeaux, meeting incredible people, walking vineyards and cellars, learning, tasting and experiencing these w**e regions from the inside, this somehow brought the entire journey together.

So many w**es tasted. So many lessons learned. So many wonderful people welcomed us into their world.

And to finish it all with a w**e that already meant something to me made it that much more special.

Château Haut-Batailley and Verso — you were the perfect ending.

A visit, a journey and an experience I will never, ever forget.

And finally… au revoir Bordeaux. 🍷🇫🇷

Another truly special Bordeaux experience!

A huge thank you to our friends at Aquitaine for organizing this visit and introducing us to Julien Muffre, one of the two brothers who own and manage Châteaux Bellegrave and Lalande.

We had the absolute pleasure of spending a few wonderful hours with Julien, being shown around the magical Château du Glana estate, hearing the story of his family, learning about their w**emaking philosophy and, of course, getting to taste the delicious Château Lalande.

And what a setting! From the incredible rows of beautifully dyed w**e barrels, to the enormous aging tanks, to the fabulous artwork found throughout the property — there seemed to be something fascinating around every corner.

But, as always, it was the opportunity to spend time with the people behind the w**e that made the experience so memorable. Hearing Julien talk about his family, their history and their approach to w**emaking brought everything in the glass to life.

We definitely walked away feeling incredibly lucky to have experienced such a personal and immersive few hours.

Thank you, Julien, and thank you to the Aquitaine team for once again opening a door that allowed us to experience Bordeaux in such a special way. 🍷🇫🇷

What an incredible and truly immersive visit to Château Charmail in the Haut-Médoc!

A huge thank you to Vivien for making us feel so incredibly welcome and for sharing not just the w**es, but the stories, history and personality of this beautiful property with us.

One of the absolute highlights was getting to meet the w**emaker himself and taste w**es straight from the barrel, then compare them with w**es aging in concrete eggs. What an experience! Being able to taste, compare, ask questions and really understand the thinking behind the w**emaking was such a fantastic learning opportunity.

And it wasn’t just about the w**e. We explored the beautiful property and even got a lesson on the château’s pigeon house and its historical significance to the region — one of those wonderful details that makes visiting Bordeaux in person so special.

So beautiful, so welcoming, so immersive — and we learned SO much.

Thank you, Vivien, and everyone at Château Charmail for opening your doors to us and giving us an experience that went far beyond simply tasting w**e.

This is why we travel to w**e country — to understand the people, the place, the history and the passion behind what eventually ends up in our glass. 🍷🇫🇷 Thank you Kelsey!
