Did you know that Coupes has a hidden, stunning 128-year-old champagne print?
This is Plate 111 from Les Maîtres de l’Affiche — “The Masters of the Poster” — the most celebrated collection of poster art ever assembled. Beginning in 1895, 1,000 lucky subscribers received four lithograph prints in the mail every month. Each print was a smaller version of a popular poster of the time. The series ran until 1900, producing 256 prints. Many of them are highly sought-after today. This print was published in March 1898.
The artist is Maurice Réalier-Dumas, a native Parisian who began his career as a devoted follower of the Impressionists — particularly Renoir. His poster work radically departed from Impressionism, embracing instead a flat, classical purity combined with elements of Byzantine mosaic. His posters seem to draw inspiration from Greek vases — and the elegant, spare figure of this woman sipping champagne from a coupe bears that out. This print is the perfect embodiment of his style.
The original was created in 1895 for the champagne house Jules Mumm & Co. of Reims — a house owned by G.H. Mumm, famous today for its Mumm’s Cordon Rouge champagne.
