On this Flag Day, we remember and honor Army Sgt. William H. Carney, who protected one of the United States' greatest symbols during the Civil War.

Born into slavery, Carney's exact journey to freedom is uncertain. He joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment at the age of 23. On July 18, 1863, Carney's regiment led the charge on Fort Wagner in South Carolina.

The unit's color guard fell under heavy enemy fire, but Carney rushed forward, caught the American flag before it could touch the ground, and carried it through the battle despite suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He kept the flag safe until he was safely brought back to Union lines.

"Boys, I did but my duty; the dear old flag never touched the ground!" Carney declared.

Carney was awarded the Medal of Honor, becoming the first African American to earn the nation’s highest military decoration for valor. He was also recognized with the Purple Heart for the wounds he sustained in combat.

More than 160 years later, Sgt. Carney’s legacy endures as a powerful reminder of the bravery of those who have defended our nation and the flag that unites us.

Residents who regularly travel between Chanhassen and Excelsior via Powers Boulevard and Mill Street should prepare for significant traffic changes as Hennepin County Government begins construction on the Mill Street Pathway Project.

The project will create a new mile-long, multi-use pathway along the east side of Mill Street (County Road 82). The pathway will extend from 2nd Street/Morse Avenue in Excelsior to Holly Lane in Chanhassen, providing a safer connection for people walking, biking and rolling between the communities and linking directly to Chanhassen's existing trail system.

Beginning June 11 and continuing through September:
-Southbound Mill Street will be closed to all traffic between 2nd Street/Morse Avenue and Holly Lane.
-Northbound Mill Street will be closed to through traffic but remain open for local access only.

Drivers should expect delays, plan extra travel time and follow posted detour routes.

The project will also include a landscaped boulevard separating the pathway from the roadway, new pavement, drainage improvements and other safety enhancements.

For more information or to sign up for project updates, visit Hennepin County's Mill Street Pathway Project webpage: https://www.hennepincounty.gov/services/roads-bridges/construction-projects/mill-street-pathway-project
