ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Stillhouse Junkies (Durango, CO)

We’re excited to welcome Stillhouse Junkies back to Buffalo this Saturday! After a few years away, the Durango-based trio returns to Buffalo to help close out our final Saturdays in the Square of the summer.

Bluegrass heroes Stillhouse Junkies are on the forefront of breaking through the genre with their free-flowing musical interplay that weaves roots, classical, texas-swing and blues into a high-energy, intricately composed yet expansively improvised tapestry of sound.

The trio, Fred Kosak (guitar, mandolin), Alissa Wolf (fiddle), Jeanette Adams (bass) are based in the wilderness town of Durango, Colorado. Formed in 2017, the band is already 3 albums deep with singles constantly streaming out including a collaboration with Tim O’Brien. Their prolific songwriting, 3-part harmonies and outrageous instrumentals brought them the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Award “Momentum Band of the Year” in 2021.

Stillhouse Junkies are quickly becoming a household name as they tour incessantly across the United States. They have played beloved festivals such as Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Rockygrass, Merle Fest, and ROMP gaining new fans every day. Their busy schedule has seen them supporting Willie Carlisle, The Lil Smokies and Asleep at the Wheel.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Rakish (Boston, MA)

This Saturday, we’re excited to welcome Rakish to Buffalo for the final Saturdays in the Square of the summer.

And before the music gets underway at Crazy Woman Square, join us for a special listening session with Rakish, Storytelling at the Heart of Celtic Music, at 12:00 noon at the Cowboy Carousel Center. Come hear more about the stories, traditions, and influences behind the music before seeing Rakish take the stage later that day.

Rooted in tradition with an ear toward the future, contemporary folk duo Rakish embodies earnest musical exploration and demonstrates an infectious playfulness on stage. In their sound together, it is evident the two friends share an unbridled love for the traditional sounds of Celtic and American music, and the tight ensemble of a group with years of collaboration under their belt.

Known for her toneful and award-winning fiddle playing in the Celtic music world, Maura Shawn Scanlin grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Maura is a 2-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition in Scotland.

Steeped in the Irish music communities of Washington D.C. and Baltimore, MD where he was raised, acclaimed guitarist Conor Hearn developed a keen interest in literary theory and poetry, a unique well of material from which he draws unending musical inspiration. His settings of modernist poems, like James Joyce’s Chamber Music, epitomize the duo’s approach: the dexterous alchemy of the old and the new into something wholly Rakish.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT!

Lena Marie Schiffer + Ani Casabonne (Livingston, MT)

This Saturday, we welcome Lena Marie Schiffer + Ani Casabonne to the Saturdays in the Square stage for our final show of the summer!

Lena Marie Schiffer is a folk singer-songwriter from Livingston, Montana, known for her deeply personal lyrics and powerful storytelling. After a decade of touring nationally with her former band, Laney Lou and the Bird Dogs, she embarked on a solo career, developing a sound that blends folk, indie, and Americana influences.

In 2024, Lena teamed up with classically trained violinist, Ani Casabonne. Originally from Frisco, Colorado, Ani discovered her love for folk and bluegrass at a young age and quickly became a staple in the Montana music scene. Together, their undeniable chemistry captivates audiences, whether in intimate venues or on festival stages.

Lena's debut solo album, House of Sky, was released on February 6th, 2026. Produced by Courtney Hartman, the album is a powerful and intimate exploration of the peaks and valleys of life. Through her deeply personal lyrics, Schiffer gracefully explores themes of love and connection, while also confronting the raw pain of grief and the uncertainty of life's challenges. Schiffer's grounded voice and honest storytelling guide listeners on a journey of self-discovery and ultimate self-forgiveness, making House of Sky not just a debut, but a testament to the quiet strength found in moving forward.

Catch Lena Marie Schiffer + Ani Casabonne this Saturday, August 22, at Crazy Woman Square in downtown Buffalo.

Prior to the August 22nd Saturdays in the Square, join Rakish for a journey into the myths and legends of Ireland, where music and storytelling are intertwined. In this workshop, participants will discover how folk tales, local lore, and even tune titles reveal the cultural heartbeat of traditional Irish music. Drawing on historic field recordings collected by
Alan Lomax and others, we’ll listen to the voices of great storytellers whose words continue to shape the way Celtic music is performed today. Through discussion, listening, and live performance, Rakish will illuminate the enduring role of storytelling in the tradition and invite participants to
experience the magic of Celtic culture firsthand.
