Maritime Republic of Eastport (The MRE) The Maritime Republic of Eastport was founded in 1998 when we seceded from Annapolis. Our goal is community and fun above all! Up the Republic! And we do.

Our premier events are the Annapolis-Eastport Tug of War and the .05K Bridge Run. Like any great movement, the concept for the Maritime Republic of Eastport began in a local pub over a couple mugs of b**r. The prime mission was to find a creative way to promote and encourage the patronage of Eastport businesses that were destined to be hurt by the Maryland State Highway Administration's shutting down for repair of the drawbridge connecting mainland Annapolis with the Eastport peninsula. The citizens of Eastport took advantage of their isolation to sever their social, political and economic ties as well - tongue in cheek - in celebration of our eclectic and quirky neighborhood.

“We like it this way” is our motto. The goal was to foster a spirit of independence and merriment in a manner befitting the character of Eastport and at the same time, to celebrate Eastport's proud heritage and quality of life. So the Maritime Republic of Eastport was founded on Super Bowl Sunday, 1998, when patriots residing on the Horn Point peninsula rose up in revolt against the snobbish suppression of "Annapolis Proper" across the harbor. Since that time, MRE has become a force in the community, doing good for the community and having fun at the same time. MRE meetings and activities are open to all.

Labor Day is behind us, which means one thing in Eastport:

TUG SEASON IS OFFICIALLY HERE. 🪢

If you’re involved in Tug planning, want to volunteer, or have ever been MRE curious, come join us this coming Tuesday!

Our general planning meeting is Tuesday, September 15th at 6 PM on the back patio of the Eastport Democratic Club at 525 State Street.

The tug will take place on Saturday, November 7, with b**rs and bands and victuals galore, and the first tug heat kicking off at the crack o' noon. Due to construction across the Gulf of Eastport, it will again be a Slaughter BY the Water, taking place fully on the Eastport side. And this year we're adding two more heats, so there's even more tugging action, which means even more opportunities to raise money for local nonprofits as we lower the boom on Annapolis.

Want to get involved? Come to our general meeting, which will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at 6 p.m., on the back patio of the Eastport Democratic Club at 525 State Street. We'll go over everything we have organized, share a general day of schedule and some top secret insider info before it's released to the rest of the world (like the list of bands!!), be reminded of the things we forgot, and get it all done in an hour tops.

(Note: EDC is a private club, and nonmembers will need to sign in. Park in the front lot, then walk around the right side of the building to get to the back patio.)

We don’t think anyone had more fun at the .05 Bridge Run than Goose the lobster dog, who won for cutest critter. Or Fergus, who won Funnest All in the Family alongside a gigantic polar bear and Coke bottle. Or the friends who brought Chessie the Bay Monster to life (dang, we wish we’d thought of that!). Or the dream team Dolly Partons. Or the crafty jellyfish. Or LJ, who scored as fastest runner for the second year in a row. There are so many more we can’t fit in these pics! Thanks again to everyone who came out to run and celebrate our beloved Eastport and help us raise money for The Boys & Girls Clubs of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County, Annapolis Police Foundation and Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park’s Box of Rain education program. We are the finest Republic in the world because of you all! We’ll see you all again at the Tug of War, coming in November!
