🚨 **NEW MEXICO KAVA COMMUNITY: AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC HEARING IS THIS THURSDAY!** 🌿

New Mexico's kava industry may be small, but its contributions to our communities matter.

This Thursday, October 22, Albuquerque will hold a public hearing on proposed food regulations that could affect local kava bars and traditional botanical beverages.

**WHAT'S BEING PROPOSED?**

The city is considering restrictions on kratom and other ingredients not classified as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS).

Traditional kava is not specifically named in the proposed prohibition, but questions remain about how the regulations could apply to kava establishments.

**WHY DOES THIS MATTER BEYOND ALBUQUERQUE?**

Look at Colorado, where kava bars have established a presence as alcohol-free gathering spaces.

Kava establishments contribute to local economies through:
🌿 Jobs and employment opportunities
🌿 Sales-tax collections and business-related fees
🌿 Commercial leases and local purchasing
🌿 Customers visiting neighboring businesses
🌿 Community events and alcohol-free social spaces

New Mexico's developing kava industry has the potential to contribute in these same ways.

The question is how proposed regulations will distinguish traditional kava preparations from other botanical ingredients while maintaining appropriate food-safety protections.

🌺 Why do we say "Bula"? 🌺

If you've spent time in a kava space, you've probably heard it: Bula! 🙌

Bula is a Fijian greeting that literally translates to "life," and it's used as a warm hello, a toast, and an expression of good wishes all in one. In Fijian culture, saying "Bula" is more than a word. It's an invitation to connect, to be present, and to share in the moment together.

That's exactly the spirit we try to bring into every Roots & Leaves Kava & Teas space. Kava has traditionally been used in Pacific Island ceremonies to bring people together, mark celebrations, and create a sense of community, and every time we raise a cup and say "Bula," we're honoring that tradition. 🍵

So next time you're at the bar and someone raises their shell or cup and says "Bula," that's your cue to raise yours right back. 🌿
