AROUCA, TRINIDAD – Visual artist and educator Luke Lashley, B.A., recently partnered with the Arouca Government Primary School to introduce students to the vibrant world of textile design through a hands-on workshop focused on "The Art of Tie-Dying".
The interactive sessions allowed students to explore their creativity, learn the foundational techniques of fabric manipulation, and discover the potential of textile art as both a creative outlet and a future entrepreneurial skill.
During the intensive workshop, students mastered complex dye-binding techniques. The young artisans successfully executed advanced patterns, including dynamic sunburst spirals, precise horizontal accordion folds, and intricate multi-colored grid patterns on custom t-shirts.
Reflecting on the success of the workshop, Lashley expressed his deep gratitude to the school’s leadership for making the collaboration possible:
"I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Ms. Paul and the entire team at the Arouca Government Primary School for welcoming me into their space. It was an absolute privilege to teach these bright students the art of tie-dying. Seeing their enthusiasm, watching them grasp advanced folding and binding methods, and witnessing them transform blank fabric into stunning, retail-quality art is a reminder of how vital creative education is for our youth."
The initiative aligns with Lashley’s ongoing commitment to community development and arts education across Trinidad and Tobago, empowering the next generation to embrace innovation, craftsmanship, and self-expression.
