🇬🇧 A Fragile Peace
To mark International Peace Day, celebrated on September 21, let’s take a look at this 1801 poster announcing the festivities held in honor of the peace treaty signed between France and England. The coup d’état that took place two years earlier was also being celebrated on this occasion. The program included an official procession, the unveiling of a column dedicated to Peace, illuminations, and a ball.
While this event reflected hopes for a return to stability, that peace proved to be short-lived. Conflicts soon resumed and continued almost uninterrupted until the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815.
