Standing sentry over the Ouvane River near Kealkill, outside Bantry, you'll find Carriganass Castle Carraig an Easa – ‘the rock of the waterfall’. 🏰

Built around 1540 by Dermot O'Sullivan Beare, its walls have witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in Irish history.

In 1602, Dónal Cam O'Sullivan Beare led his followers past its gates on his march to Leitrim. It was the last time he was to lay eyes on one of his strongholds - it was a significant moment that helped mark the end of the Gaelic Order in Ireland.

After Donal Cam's departure, the castle survived as a military fortress for less than a hundred years. It was later used to house farm buildings, and, in 1880, cornerstones from the castle tower were taken to Bantry for use in the refurbishment of Bantry House.

But the castle remained a source of local pride. It was bought back by the O'Sullivans in the 1930s, and, in 2002, the family donated it to the community. Today it is in the care of the Carriganass Development Association.

It remains as one of the finest tower houses in West Cork, and it is well worth a visit, either during our weekend of celebrations or when you next make it to West Cork.

This June Bank Holiday Weekend, the O'Sullivans return to Beara, travelling in the other direction for a world record attempt at a family name gathering. 💚

📍 Join us to celebrate our shared history and the pride we've kept in our name, long after our ancestors were scattered.
