Beyond the House, gardens, and formal landscape that visitors experience today lies the story of a busy working estate.

Long before Fota became a place people visited for tours, gardens, and walks through the estate, it was the centre of a working world. Like many great country houses of the 19th century, the estate was designed to support much of its own daily needs through a network of kitchen gardens, orchards, farmland, and estate buildings.

Fruit, vegetables, flowers, and produce were cultivated on the estate, while gardeners, labourers, servants, and estate workers helped sustain both the House and the wider grounds throughout the year.

Today, the Victorian Working Gardens offer a reminder of this important aspect of life at Fota. They provide a connection to the skills, knowledge, and dedication that lay behind the running of a large estate and the many people whose work often took place beyond the view of family and guests.

While much has changed over the generations, the relationship between Fota House and the landscape that surrounds it remains central to the story of the estate.

Because behind the elegance of every great house was a working world that helped sustain it.
