What a night at The Rec!
A bumper turnout and a raucous crowd saw ticket sales push our Open the Box jackpot past the £500 mark!
The atmosphere was electric. The anticipation unbearable.
Then came the draw.
A number was called. A moment of silence. And from somewhere in the crowd, a nervous hand rose.
It belonged to none other than Wrington’s luckiest man, Dave Valle.
Dave made his way to the bar, winning ticket clutched tightly in his hand, looking every inch a man about to confront his destiny.
Then came the question.
“Dave… take the guaranteed cash, or gamble everything for a shot at the jackpot?”
After enough Bullseye theatrics to make Jim Bowen turn in his grave, Dave made his decision.
HE WAS GOING TO OPEN THE BOX.
A hush descended over The Rec.
Glasses stopped clinking. Conversations ceased. Somewhere, a heartbeat could be heard.
Dave approached the box.
The key trembled in his hand.
A solitary bead of sweat formed on his temple, crept slowly down his cheek and fell, almost apologetically, onto his Manchester United shirt.
The key entered the lock.
Dave took a breath.
He turned…
Nothing.
No click.
No turn.
No jackpot.
For one fleeting moment, Dave had dared to dream.
And just like that, the dream was over.
The crowd erupted. Dave returned to his pint, a little older, a little wiser, and considerably less wealthy than he’d hoped.
