Some Halloween decorations are older than others…
Hidden in the medieval timber screen at The Bull is a deliberate burn mark, one of the protective marks people once made around entrances, fireplaces and other vulnerable parts of Suffolk buildings. Also, ‘Witches’ Circles’ or ‘Witches’ marks, these symbols were intended to guard against evil spirits, witchcraft and bad luck.
Look a little closer and you’ll find more marks carved into the timber: a Nine of Diamonds, an intertw**ed M and A, and the initials “E.B.” alongside the date 20 September 1675.
They have been here for centuries, part of the building’s history.
