A few honest thoughts from us at The Jolly Fisherman following today’s Budget…
Disappointed? That’s putting it politely.
Like so many in hospitality, we wanted to see real support for an industry that keeps people employed, supports local businesses and gives communities somewhere to come together.
Instead, we’re left wondering how much more pubs are expected to absorb before the sums simply stop adding up.
We work hard to keep The Jolly Fisherman somewhere you can enjoy an affordable meal, watch the football, celebrate with family or pop in for a pint and a chat. We want to look after our team, pay fairly and keep investing in your local.
But every extra cost has to come from somewhere. There isn’t a bottomless pot behind the bar — we’ve checked. 🍺
And we know putting prices up isn’t a simple answer. Our customers are feeling the squeeze too.
A pub means much more than the drinks it sells. It’s someone’s first job, a catch-up with old friends, a family celebration and, for some, the only conversation they’ll have all day.
When a local closes, you lose all of that too.
The government is happy to talk about the importance of the Great British pub. We’d like to see that reflected in the support hospitality actually receives.
Practical help with VAT and the cost of doing business would give pubs a chance to invest, grow and keep serving their communities. We can’t keep being expected to do more with less.
To everyone who chooses The Jolly Fisherman, thank you. We know you have plenty of demands on your money, and we appreciate every visit.
We’re proud to be your local. We just want a fair chance to keep building its future. ❤️
