Originally built as a coaching inn in 1748, this Grade II listed free house is located in the Cotswolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With tales of witches in the village and a nearby prehistoric stone circle (the Roll Right Stones), there is as much of interest to the historian as there is the tourist. Eat in the bar with its settles and inglenook fireplace, or the adjoining restaurant area, choosing from the seasonal menu. Options range from light bites, salads and sharing plates to hearty mains including cod and chips (gluten free option available) and a steak and Hook Norton pie. Wash down your meal of choice with a local real ale, your choice of wine from our carefully curated selection or one of the many options on our extensive 'nos & lows' list. The delightful individually styled seven en suite bedrooms have Egyptian cotton bed linen, luxury toiletries and fluffy towels, tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen televisions and hairdryers.

🐾 Meet Arnold the nearly 2 year-old Doberman 🐾

This handsome boy was a bit tired and grumpy when he first arrived, having had a busy day out and about, but after a big snooze he decided he was ready for a late night run around in the bar with Bella and Orlagh. Having been The Red Lion pub dog for a few years now, Bella has learnt a trick or two and, after a little while, she cleverly left the youngsters to play while she slinked off with Arnold's bone 🤣.

When he's out and about, Arnold needs a Halti harness to keep him in order, as he's a very strong boy. When he stayed with us earlier this month, his owners warned us that he is wary of new people and often grumbles if they get too close. He soon warmed up to Lisa though and let her give him cuddles 🥰. It was lovely to have him stay with and to see how chilled out he was with us by the time we took these pictures of him at breakfast time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2nd quiz of the 2026-7 season in aid of the One Wish Dog Foundation. Our generous quizzers gave our record-breaking first quiz a fortnight ago a really good run for its money and raised a fantastic £708.

We were delighted to welcome a team from One Wish for the evening, which included veteran canine team members, Rufus and Jess, both of whom are 14 and a half years old and were taken on as foster dogs 5 and a half years ago and never left 😁. The team told us that it costs £600 to bring in each dog they rescue, so yesterday's total will literally transform a life 🥰.

Congratulations to the winning quiz team, misleadingly named The Only Way is Down, which proved that actually it is possible to plateau, as it was basically the winning team from last time, with a slight change of line up (they're basically the pub quiz version of the Sugababes).

Our next quiz is on Sunday 8th November, when we'll be fundraising for Lawrence Nurses and our kind sponsor will be Chipping Norton Event Hire. See you then!

Get your festive to-do list off to a flying start with our November Larkswold craft workshop, when we'll be making Scandi-inspired Christmas cards with the lovely Michelle.

This is Paul. Paul can turn his hand to a range of different roles and is the equivalent of allspice at The Red Lion. Allspice seems like it should be a blend of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper but is actually only one (the dried, unripe berries of the Pimenta dioica tree).

Like his spicy role model, Paul's talents suggest he should be several different people, each with distinctly different job titles. He's a chef by contract, but has also successfully done shifts front of house, completed various handyman tasks about the place, regularly moonlights as Bella's dog walker and can always be relied on to do shots in the afternoon and swear like a sailor when the need arises (and sometimes when it doesn't). Quite the 21st Century man 😁.

We're looking forward to welcoming everyone to this Sunday's fully booked quiz in aid of One Wish Dog Foundation. This fantastic charity rescues dogs in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire and gives them another chance to find a safe and loving home. The charity has recently won the animal category of the BBC's Make a Difference Awards, which were announced in the middle of September 🥳🥳.

🐾 Meet Gaïa the 7 year-old Blue Merle Border Collie 🐾

This gorgeous girl visited The Red Lion from her home in France. She was initially booked in for one night, but then her pawrents spontaneously decided to stay for a second night and then a third. She has experienced three of our seven dog-friendly rooms, so she's something of an expert now 🤣.

Like a proper continental chien, she likes a nice, freshly baked baguette, but she'll settle for any old bread if none of the good stuff is available. When she's not chewing on bakery items she likes hanging out with her pawrents and playing chase with either a duck or a ball.

Gaïa has a very mixed relationship with water. She loves swimming but pointblank refuses to go out in the rain unless she is wearing a coat and will run for cover if anyone suggests she might need a bath.

We love it when dogs and their humans visit us from afar and we hope to welcome Gaïa and her owners back to The Red Lion the next time they visit the Cotswolds.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Metal Embossing craft workshop with Larkswold yesterday evening. The silence from the games room suggested that they had all given up and left, but the amazing results prove that they were just concentrating really hard!

🐾 Meet Miles the 7 year-old Spaniel 🐾

This gorgeous boy is multi-talented. Not only can he swim and run round in circles at great speed, he can also sing along to opera. When he's not working out or singing, Miles loves to chill with his favourite pheasant toy and snack on gravy bones.

We loved hearing his vocal stylings last week and we hope he will come back and treat us to another aria soon.
