🎲 Backgammon club is moving to Fridays

Quick heads-up for everyone who came along to our first night: the Anchor's Rest Backgammon Club is switching from Thursdays to Fridays, 7–9pm, starting tomorrow — Friday 30th October.

Nothing's wrong and nothing's stopped. There's another backgammon club running on Thursdays locally, and we'd rather not split the players or make anyone choose. More backgammon in the area is a good thing, so we'll take the Friday slot and leave Thursday to them.

Same tables, same dice, same friendly crowd at Anchor's Rest Bar & Bistro on the harbour. Free to play, all abilities welcome — complete beginners very much included, and we'll happily talk you through your first game. Dogs welcome too 🐾

So: Fridays, 7–9pm, from tomorrow. See you over a board.

Backgammon club is on the move 🎲

Quick heads-up: there’s another backgammon club running on Thursdays, so rather than clash with them, we’re shifting ours to Fridays.

Same board, same dice, same terrible doubling decisions — just a different day. 7pm kick-off as always, all levels welcome, no need to bring anything except a willingness to lose to someone who rolled a 6-6 at the worst possible moment.
First Friday session is this Friday (30th)

See you there.

Looking for a regular table for your game night?

Anchor’s Rest in Paignton already hosts a chess club, and we want more of the same energy: people who sit down, play, and make a night of it.

If you run (or want to start) a group for backgammon, cards, board games, or similar table games, we’d like you here as a regular fixture.

Think:

Backgammon

Poker, rummy, bridge, cribbage

Board game nights

Other sit-down games that need tables, not a sports screen

You’ll get a proper local bar that works as a community hub, space for a weekly or monthly meet, and a room that feels like your group’s home rather than a one-off hire.

If you’ve got a group looking for a Paignton venue — or you’ve always wanted to start one — message us, drop in, or comment with the game and the day that suits you.

Heads up, football fans! This Wednesday Anchor’s Rest will be closing early at 7pm so our staff can actually watch the England World Cup game instead of just hearing your goal celebrations from behind the bar and questioning the ref’s eyesight from a distance.

Come in a bit earlier to stock up on your pre‑match pints and good vibes, then head home to shout at the TV with the rest of us. Thanks for understanding – we’ll be back to normal hours once we’ve recovered from the emotional rollercoaster!
