Teaming up with independent suppliers of rare wines and authentic Italian meats and cheeses, Popina delivers a wine list unlike any other.

Popina by Lynrace is a wine & charcuterie bar inspired by the popinae of Ancient Rome, which served wine and simple food to slaves, freedmen, foreigners, and those of the ‘lower classes’. Red, white, rosé, amber, and sparkling wine, as well as meats, cheeses, and plant-based options will be on offer.

WINE OF THE WEEK

On a recent visit to the very excellent wine bar Naughty piglets in Brixton, this bottle stood out like a sore thumb. It was delicious. So much so we got it shipped directly from France, just for you all to enjoy it here in Popina.

This is Domaine Nøvice’s Rosé Pet Nat from Poligny, Jura (the first Jura wine at Popina, can you believe?!) - a region known for other delicious things like Comté and Vin Jaune.

It’s a blend of Villard Blanc and Villard Noir, themselves hybrid grapes created in the 1930s. Once some of the most popular grapes in France, in 1977 the French government banned it from AOC wines and also ripped out a load of vines - there are still some plantings dotted around that managed to survive though.

This is actually a collaboration between Nøvice and a nearby brewery, Brasserie Atmosphère, hence the beer bottle format. Fermentation is finished in tank, no fining nor filtration.

It’s all about the fruit here. A lovely dark salmon colour, chock full of things like raspberry and redcurrant. It’s wonderful.

WINE OF THE WEEK

We’re delighted to have got hold of another limited release from the legendary South Downs duo Dermot and Anna Sugrue. Every wine we’ve done from them has just been astonishingly good, and this is certainly no exception.

This is a blend of 97% Pinot Meunier and 3% Gamay from two different vineyards in Kent and West Sussex. Whole-bunch fermented, aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels, and bottled just after 4 months. Sussex Nouveau, as it were.

Think bright, vibrant red cherry, cranberry and oak spice, with a lip-smacking acidity.

Julia Harding MW sums it up perfectly: “Absolutely delicious and remarkable for an English Pinot Meunier.”

The best experiences always seem to happen by accident. Well, at least we think so. After a standout meal at , we ended up meeting Michael Fay, VP of Winemaking at and their sister winery in Oregon. A healthy amount of rum later we were kindly invited the next morning to sample the wares and have a full-blown tour of the estate.

Despite what looks to be a certainly tougher vintage across France given the drought and specifically summer hail in Burgundy too, Michael still managed to exude a child-like excitement when touring us across the newly-renovated, state of the art winery.

We even got to try a selection of Pinot Noirs from 2025 - a first for the team trying directly from the barrel. They were honestly stunning.

We tasted:

Santenay 1er Cru ‘Les Gravières’
Pommard ‘Les Petits Noizons’ Bas (sampled two barrels of the same wine, the difference was crazy!)
Volnay 1er Cru ‘Clos des Angles’

A huge thank you Michael for his generosity in giving us a tour mid-harvest, and very special mention to Olivier, Charlie and Léo for being absolute legends, and running the best restaurant in Beaune.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Despite people’s notions, Crouch Valley, Essex is currently the best place in the UK for still wines. Gareth and Jimmy at The Heretics have very much capitalised on this and made one of the most stunning Chardonnays we’ve had in a while.

56% tank fermented, 44% in old burgundy barrels, with 56% of the mix undergoing malolactic conversion. A textured masterclass in Chardonnay that other winemakers could only wish to make.

Every bottle has a different artwork, with the guys championing young and up-and-coming artists across the UK.

In their own words:

We aren’t ones for flowery tasting notes laden with aromas and flavours that most people need help understanding, so we’ll keep this simple. The wine is fresh, clean, and lemony without being tart, It is beautifully balanced with a long length; you won’t notice the oak. Drink it with whatever you like – fish, a dancing partner, your picky father-in-law, Saul’s latest album (we can’t keep up), or even on your own with a bag of crisps and the stereo up to 11, or even 420, no judgements here.

It’s an effing awesome wine.

WINE OF THE WEEK

We’re doing our second of three wines from Chris Boiling’s acclaimed Experimental Wine Series, this time a stunning rosé from Hungary.

100% Kekfrankos (loosely pronounced cake-frank-osh!), otherwise know as Blaufrankisch in Austria. It’s Hungary’s most planted red grape, and is often the mainstay in cheap and cheerful red wine/crisp rosé wines. Luckily it’s being given a bit more attention now and you do find some more serious reds being produced too.

Just 2 hours on skins produces this stunning deep salmon colour, before being fermented and then aged for 5 months in barrel. Weekly bâtonnage means it gains a big whack of texture too.

We’ve never been ones for tasting notes on a label but this does exactly what it says on the tin. Strawberries and cream central. Just a few bottles of this around.

Our Art Wall welcomes the work of Harriet Godfrey-White.

An Oxford-based artist, Harriet studied BA Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins before completing an MA Fine Art at Oxford Brookes. Her work explores the body and nature in relation to time, memory, and movement, using line, mark making, and colour to capture temporary states and the beauty of everyday experience.

WINE OF THE WEEK

It’s time to open one of our staff favourites and give you a chance to try it by the glass.

This is a Sancerre from highly regarded Domaine François Crochet in the village of Bué, just outside of Sancerre itself. François has been making wine since 1998 and has since cemented himself as serious craftsman - it could be said that he has become a victim of his own success and sometimes struggles to keep up with demand.

This is a real textbook example of what Sancerre should be. It’s all hand-harvested, and François and his wife Carine practice biodynamic farming too. The wine spends some time on the lees for a bit of extra viscosity, but still has that typical zippy acidity. 2023 was a warmer vintage in the Loire, and this wine definitely entertains more tropical fruit

It is an absolute banger. Come and try some, bonus points if you have it with our triple milk cheese La Tur from Piedmont.
