A centuries old Cheshire tradition is coming to life once again. The Antrobus Soul Cakers keep this fascinating piece of English folk heritage alive with performances around Cheshire.
Dating back around 1,000 years, Soul Caking has its roots in ancient customs associated with All Hallows’ Eve and All Saints’ Day.
🍪 But why is it called Soul Caking?
Traditionally, children would go door-to-door, singing and praying for the souls of the givers’ deceased relatives believed to be in Purgatory. In return, homeowners would offer small spiced biscuits known as soul cakes.
Over time, in places such as Cheshire, these customs evolved into ‘Soul Caking’ a form of traditional mumming where groups of performers travel from pub to pub, bringing centuries-old folk plays to life.
It’s a tradition that connects us to our past, and thanks to groups like the Antrobus Soul Cakers it continues to thrive today.
