The 1980s gave us many memorable things, including MTV, the VCR (ask your granda) and the decidedly Marmite combo of mullet and moustache.

For Newry, the decade signalled another game-changing arrival, and that was the Brass Monkey.

This week, I called in to find out why everyone is still going bananas for this beloved boozer.

This evergreen bar and grill, found opposite Newry court and a stone’s throw from the town hall, has thrived by tastefully evolving with the times while retaining all the qualities that made it popular in the first place.

If you’re searching for creamy pints and top-notch pub grub, look no further. This is a pub that does not monkey around, with its steak and seafood lauded locally.

As well as being a great spot for a first date, it’s capable of hosting large groups, with plenty of room and side bars inside.

It’s a comfortable and welcoming place in which to wile away the hours.

It’s a spot recommended for those who adore wallet-friendly, everyman pubs. Service during my stay was flawless.
