May Round-Up at District House

What a month it’s been!

☀️ We welcomed back Sundays at District just in time for the return of the sunshine, with our garden becoming the perfect place to relax.

❤️ We were also proud to support New Brighton in the Town of Culture, helping showcase the incredible community, creativity and spirit that make our town so special.

🧬 Pint of Science returned to District House this month, bringing together curious minds for an evening of fascinating talks and conversation in a unique setting.

💿 Soul Lounge once again filled District House with great music, good company and unforgettable vibes.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting our second Pint of Science event! 🧬 🧪

Pint of Science is an annual worldwide science festival which brings researchers to local bars & cafes to share their scientific discoveries with the general public.

We listened to some amazing speakers tell us all about the wonders of the hidden world of the microbiome. These amazing speakers provided great insight into things like how the impact our pets diets have on our own health as well as the global dangers posed by antimicrobial resistance.

We were also educated on the amazing potential of phage viruses in combating this antimicrobial resistance. It was a truly awe-inspiring night with some really engaging questions from the audience.

We wanted to thank everyone who came out as well as all the wonderful speakers that took the time to share with us the incredible work they’re doing.

We can’t wait until next year to see what other amazing things we can learn!

Last night at District House we held an event called 'A Pint Of Science' . Scientist from JMU give presentations about their scientific research . Last night it was three female scientists who are all working in areas connected to the Microbiome and Antibiotic resistance .The senior lecturer was focused on bacteriophage therapy or phage therapy for short. A phage is a tiny virus that latches its fibres onto a bacteria and impregnates it with DNA, hijacking the machinery of the cell and forcing it to produce countless more phages which eventually burst out, destroying the bacteria, doing the job that antibiotics do . It was discovered the 1896 but when penicillin was invented the west took the antibiotic route and discarded it. Luckily Georgia continued to develop it and they are now the world centre for phage therapy whilst the west is besieged with antibiotic resistance.. Phage Therapy bypasses this resistance so the scientists at JMU are revisiting it... It was an amazing talk and the morale of the story... If you're ill and are resistant to antibiotic treatment head for Georgia 👍

The increasing failure of antibiotics to combat infections like multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus has renewed interest in a long-forgotten treatment developed over 60 years ago in ex-Soviet Georgia. Tom Parfitt travelled to Tbilisi to witness the revival of bacteriophage therapy.
