HIGH ENERGY COSTS
I have just spent the best part of two weeks negotiating new Gas and Electricity contracts for Nairn Legion. Having agreed the new contracts I decided to see what AI would suggest.

Based on your £12,000 annual spend, I'd estimate that relocating the same business to:

Spain or Portugal might reduce the bill by perhaps 15-30%.
France might be 10-20% lower.
Germany or Ireland could easily be similar or higher.

Those are broad estimates rather than audited figures, but they align more closely with what businesses actually pay than domestic tariff comparisons do.

Your £12,000 figure also highlights why many UK business owners are frustrated when they hear that UK gas is often cheaper than much of Europe. The commodity itself may be competitive, but once all the additional charges are added, the final invoice can tell a very different story.

REMEMBRANCE 2026 – BUGLER
Our excellent, loyal Bugler Ted Sayers is not available this year. He has played at the Nairn Act of Remembrance longer than I have been doing the groundwork. The playing of the Last Post and Reveille adds significantly to the occasion. Do we have a Bugler available who could help us out?

Bugler sorted. A Queen's Own Highlander is travelling from the Central Belt to play for us.

Thank you,

POPPY APPEAL AND REMEMBRANCE 2026

It is that time of year again when we at Nairn Legion raise money for Poppy Scotland and do the groundwork for Remembrance Sunday on the 8th of November, when services and Acts of Remembrance will be held at various locations. We will be assisted by various Youth Organisations who will be carrying out collections over the next few weekends. In addition, the traditional Lady Haig Coffee Morning, a main fundraiser, will be held on Saturday the 7th of November at the Legion at 10AM. Poppies and Collection Tins will be distributed to businesses and organisations throughout the town and surrounding area this week. We normally raise in the region of £10,000 and it would be great if we could do the same this year.

REMEMBRANCE 2026 - WREATHS
There is always a last minute rush to obtain wreaths for some organisations for Remembrance. This causes extra cost and unnecessary hassle for our limited volunteer staff. Can I therefore request that you get your Wreath Orders in by Friday the 28th of August 2026. Email [email protected] or ring Zanne our Treasurer 07816865311.
