Middleham Castle, Sunrising
What connects Edward IV, Shakespeare and this painting of Middleham Castle?
Shakespeare’s Richard III opens with one of the most famous lines in English theatre:
“Now is the winter of our discontent�Made glorious summer by this sun of York.”
The “Sunne in Splendour” was the badge of Edward IV, inspired by the extraordinary appearance of three suns in the sky before the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross in 1461. Shakespeare slips the reference neatly into the words of Edward’s younger brother, Richard.
And somewhere in the back of my mind that image of the sun became part of this painting. Middleham was the castle where Richard spent much of his childhood and later made his home. I wanted the great bulk of the castle almost lost in the morning light, with the rising sun blazing above it.
