A lovely autumnal view, with the golden foliage framing the ancient stonework of Fountains Abbey. And what a delightful irony in the name Surprise View — the surprise being that only part of the abbey reveals itself! 🍂

One of the most enjoyable projects I've worked on in recent years has been a series of collaborations with my friend, the printmaker Anna Matyus.
We chose buildings that we both have an affection for. Anna designed and printed the etchings and I added washes of watercolour.
This is Kirkham Priory, one of the loveliest ruins in Yorkshire. I particularly enjoyed working with Anna's beautiful architectural detail and adding the warm colours and enhancing the decorative patterns.
Two artists working on a single picture is quite an unusual arrangement, and there was plenty of discussion along the way. We both had our own ideas about how the finished pieces should look.
But that's what made the project so interesting. We were delighted with the results, and I think we both came away with a greater appreciation of each other's skills.
