We’re thrilled to have been shortlisted for Hotel Design of the Year at the Independent Hotel Awards, alongside some of the UK’s most beautifully designed and inspiring independent hotels.

As stewards of England’s oldest hotel and a Grade I-listed building, design at The Old Bell is about far more than creating beautiful interiors. It’s about respecting centuries of history while giving the hotel a bold, distinctive identity for the future.

That vision comes from our owner, Kim Hanks, working alongside interior designer Charlotte Smiley to combine historic architecture, rich colour, layered textiles, antiques, contemporary pieces and plenty of personality.

The result is a hotel that celebrates its heritage without ever feeling dated, and we’re delighted to see that approach recognised nationally.

Dating all the way back to 1220, The Old Bell Hotel in Malmesbury proves that a historic getaway doesn’t have to be dusty and drafty. Taking a quick weekend escape from Bristol is easy at this 800-year-old spot, which perfectly balances traditional charm with eccentric interiors and modern comforts.

🛎️ The Stay: There are 34 individually designed bedrooms, two distinct bars, and a hyper-seasonal on-site restaurant. The building received a top-to-toe refurbishment in 2021 and is now filled with quirky antiques from the owners' global travels.

Join us in The Cloister Gardens on Saturday 31st October, from 12pm–3.30pm, for a frightfully fun afternoon celebrating our four-legged friends.
