There's always something happening up here, with live music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. From our Thursday acoustic buskers' nights to brilliant bands and tribute acts performing in the famous Tan Hill Barn, why not make a proper night of it and stay over?

This Bonfire Night and throughout the weekend, Tan Hill Inn will be a firework-free zone, offering a peaceful escape from the bangs and loud noises.

We know that for many people, pets and families, this time of year can be difficult. So, if you're looking for somewhere to escape it all, we'd love to welcome you.

At 1,732 feet, surrounded by miles of peaceful Yorkshire moorland, the loudest thing you're likely to hear is the occasional sheep having a good old baa! 🐑

Bring your campervan and settle in for a peaceful night, or simply make the journey up for a few hours of respite, some delicious Yorkshire food and a cosy spot beside our roaring log fires.

❤️ WE’RE OPEN AGAIN, AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!

After an unexpected closure due to unplanned maintenance, we’re delighted to say that the doors of Tan Hill Inn are back open, the fires are roaring and we’re ready to welcome you all again!

Being Britain’s highest inn is something we’re incredibly proud of, but running a pub completely off-grid, 1,732 feet above sea level, comes with its challenges.

Unlike your average pub, the costs involved in simply opening our doors each day are enormous. Keeping the lights on, the fires burning, the kitchen running and this historic old inn welcoming visitors takes a huge amount of work and expense.

That’s why every single person who walks through our doors matters so much to us.

Whether you’re a local who regularly makes the journey up, a walker passing through, or someone who’s had Tan Hill on their bucket list for years, your support is what keeps this special little place going.

We don’t have a village on our doorstep or a steady stream of passing trade. We rely on people making the journey to see us, and we’re so grateful to everyone who does.

🌕🐺 ON THIS ALL HALLOWS' EVE, BEWARE THE MOORS OF TAN HILL...

For centuries, the desolate moors surrounding Tan Hill have been shrouded in tales of strange creatures lurking in the darkness.

Long after wolves disappeared from these wild northern hills, travellers continued to whisper of something far more sinister stalking the fell after nightfall. Heavy footsteps following unseen, low growls carried on the wind and the shadow of a monstrous beast moving silently amongst the peat hags beneath the moonlight.

Some believed it was no ordinary animal, but a creature neither man nor wolf. And so the legend of the Tan Hill Werewolf was born...

Perhaps it's nothing more than an old Yorkshire tale, but on this most haunted of nights, when darkness falls and the moors grow silent, you might find yourself walking a little faster towards the welcoming lights of the Inn.

After all, there's a reason some stories are best told beside a roaring fire, with the doors firmly bolted.

👻 TALES FROM TAN HILL: THE SHROUDED FIGURE ON THE MOOR

There are some paths best left unexplored after dark...

According to an old tale from the moors surrounding Tan Hill, a group of traders once lost their way whilst travelling across the lonely fell. With darkness closing in and no sign of shelter, they followed an unfamiliar track through the bleak landscape, eventually arriving at an ancient stone cairn.

Realising they had strayed from their route, the travellers turned back, retracing their footsteps across the deserted moor.
But they were no longer alone. Somewhere behind them, a mysterious figure appeared on the path, its form concealed beneath a dark shroud.

Who, or what, was following them across the fell?

The story has survived as part of the eerie folklore of these Yorkshire moors, where centuries of travellers have faced the darkness, the isolation and whatever their imaginations might have conjured from the mist.

And should you ever find yourself wandering the moors around Tan Hill after nightfall, remember...
Just because you can't see anyone behind you, doesn't mean you're walking alone. 🌫️

🐎 TALES FROM TAN HILL: DICK TURPIN & BLACK BESS

High on the lonely Yorkshire moors, far from prying eyes and the long arm of the law, Tan Hill Inn is said to have once offered refuge to one of England's most notorious highwaymen...Dick Turpin.

According to local legend, the infamous outlaw used the remote Inn as a hiding place, stabling his legendary horse, Black Bess, while he sought shelter from those pursuing him.

In the 18th century, these wild, isolated moors would have provided the perfect cover for a man on the run. With miles of open fell, winding tracks and few neighbours, Tan Hill was a world away from the authorities searching for him.

Whether Turpin ever truly crossed our threshold remains a mystery, but the story has endured as part of the Inn's rich folklore.

And on a dark, windswept night, when the mist rolls across the moors, it's not difficult to imagine the sound of distant hoofbeats approaching through the darkness...

History or legend? We'll leave that for you to decide. 🕯️

As we approach spooky season, let's delve into some of the ghostly tales, mysterious happenings and centuries-old folklore surrounding Tan Hill Inn.

👻 THE GHOST OF SUSAN PEACOCK: THE LANDLADY WHO NEVER LEFT TAN HILL INN...

High on the lonely Yorkshire moors, our old Inn has witnessed more than its fair share of history. But one of its most mysterious tales belongs to former landlady Susan Peacock, who some believe still wanders its rooms to this day...

Susan first arrived at Tan Hill in 1903 with her husband Richard Parrington, helping restore the Inn's fortunes during the decline of the local mining industry. She later became something of a local celebrity, sharing stories of life at Tan Hill through wireless radio broadcasts that attracted hundreds of curious visitors.

But according to legend, Susan's devotion to the Inn didn't end with her death.

Glasses have reportedly flown from shelves without explanation, particularly when changes are made that she might not approve of. One former guest even claimed to have woken in the dead of night to find a mysterious woman dressed in 1930s clothing standing silently at the foot of the bed.

Could it have been Susan, still keeping a watchful eye over the place she once called home?

More than a century has passed since she first arrived, and while the world beyond these moors has changed, Tan Hill still stands.

And perhaps, when the last guest has gone to bed and the fires burn low, its former landlady is still making her rounds...

The road from Keld is currently closed. The good news is, there's more than one road that leads to Britain's highest inn.

Access from the A66 and from Reeth/ Richmond is absolutely fine, so you can still reach us as normal from those directions.

P.S. please don't follow the sheep as they don't know where they're going either.
