Wednesday 17 June 8pm: Julian Nicholas/Emil Viklicky ft. Imogen Ryall

The gig tonight, featuring Julian Nicholas-sax, Emil Viklicky-piano and Imogen Ryall-vocals will be a celebration of Julian and Emil’s 35-year musical collaboration. The multi-Award-winning Czech pianist/composer Emil Viklický has enjoyed a successful transatlantic career over the past five decades, recording and performing with the likes of Bill Frisell, Ray Brown & Wynton Marsalis. His many works include a classical piano concerto, an opera and an iconic film score. Loose Tubes prodigy turned Brit-jazz sax institution Julian Nicholas is no stranger to followers of top-flight UK jazz. His fluent and muscular sax playing has been featured at the Club since the 90s and he is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz saxophonists in the UK. The wonderful vocalist Imogen Ryall was an APPJAG 2024-nominee for Best Vocalist and Best Album for her much-lauded lyrical re-settings of Emil’s ‘folk-inspired’ album ‘Songs’. Performing material recorded over six albums with a number of brilliant tunes enhanced by Imogen’s excellent lyrics alongside a choice selection of jazz standards, the quintet also features Dave Whitford-bass & Winston Clifford-drums.

“Viklicky…exceptional” Guardian; “subtlety lie[s] at the heart of Viklicky's greatness” Independent; "Nicholas…delicacy of expression and intensity of feeling" Times; “Ryall… flawless, she…manages to combine…effortless precision with a warm, inviting sound” Jazzwise

Monday 15 June 8pm: James Morton's "Groove Den"

One of the most exciting saxophonists of his generation Bristol-based James Morton has performed and recorded with the likes of P*e Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley, George Clinton and the Herbaliser Band. He played his first gig at the age of 12, was at Glastonbury by 16 and soon after that was appearing at festivals across the US and Europe, just taking time out to get his Masters degree in Music. With two critically acclaimed albums and a growing reputation as a writer and arranger James is very much the sax player to look out for. Tonight he will be bringing his organ-based band Groove Den to the Club, featuring Anders Olinder (P*e Wee Ellis)-organ, Alex Hutchings (Steven Wilson)-guitar & Francesco Mendolia (Incognito)-drums performing a mix of jazz, funk, hip-hop, soul and rock, the unifying elements being groove and feel. Featuring lyrical, funky, soulful saxophone and blistering guitar solos Groove Den takes listeners, as the band says “on a journey from New Orleans to the urban streets of Bristol!”.

Jazz on the Lawn at Fulham Palace - Saturday 18 July: 606 All Stars - 50th Anniversary Celebration 🥳

Steve Rubie started running the 606 in 1976 when it was located at 606 Kings Road, making 2026 our 50 Year Anniversary!!!

With a focus on presenting the finest UK musicians, for this Jazz on the Lawn show we have put together an All-Star Ensemble, with three singers (Natalie Duncan, Jo Harrop & Polly Gibbons) and three sax players as featured in this video (Brandon Allen, Alec Harper and Denys Baptiste), all of whom have played at the Club on many an occasion.

Blues and Soul Magazine says that Brandon Allen is a "saxophone heavyweight at the height of his powers", BeBop Spoken Here calls Alec Harper "a leading contender among the heavies" and Time Magazine stated that Denys Baptiste is the "icon of British jazz"!

What a great way to preview our 50th, officially starting in October.

The Club will be hosting a full bar and we'll also have food available for sale. But as ever, you are also welcome to bring your own libations, picnics etc. These shows will go on rain or shine.

To buy tickets, find out more about this show and our Friday night event with the Coalminers, visit https://www.606club.co.uk/events/fulham-palace-1/

Sunday Lunch 14 June 1:30pm: Gareth Lockrane Big Band

Gareth Lockrane has established himself as one of the finest jazz flautists in Europe, with a string of high profile appearances alongside the likes of the James Taylor Quartet, Natalie Williams and the late, great, Bheki Mseleku. It is a measure of Gareth’s international standing that he was named “Rising Star on Flute” in the prestigious Downbeat Critics Poll (USA), just one of many awards and accolades he’s received. Performing his brilliant arrangements of a mix of originals and the odd classic jazz standard, the ensemble inevitably attracts a host of high-profile award-winning players, today including Jon Shenoy, Sam Glaser, Julian Siegel Music, Graeme Blevins, Tom Smith; Brinley Heywood, Gabriel Taylor, Sid Gauld, Henry Collins; Trev Mires, Olli Martin, Harry Maund, Jim Owen; Ross Stanley; Mike Outram; Ryan Trebilcock; Ian Thomas and Pat Levett.

And to make things even more exciting, the ensemble recently released its second, highly anticipated album, "Box of Tricks" (Whirlwind Recordings) which is already receiving reviews such as this one from UK Jazz News "This excellent album is not so much a Box of Tricks as a carefully lit display case of gemstones". Promises to be a thrill!

"The band plays a roof-lifting mix of fresh grooves…and blistering…solos from some of the country’s finest musicians. Music to make you smile, dance, and…admire, very special" Jazz FM
