This weekend we celebrate the 60th Birthday of Dean Barrett, the licensee of the Coburg Pub, and my husband for the past 10 years.
I first met Dean 35 years ago when I stepped in as a customer and I had the privilege of getting to know him and his late beloved Mum, Peggy, for many years the two of them were an amazing team at the Coburg until Peggy passed away.
The pub sits in a community that has changed a lot in those 35 years, a mix of locals from the Di**le and the Lane, south enders and a wide and varied community, and Dean is one of the longest serving Publicans in Liverpool, but the title of Publican really does not reflect the Dean I and the many customers know.
Dean is a smart and hard working man, well respected by the people that step over the door, and there are many that have drank in the Coburg long before Dean took over. Dean is a passionate Liverpool FC fan, he respects his customers and those that visit. He loves his pub and works tirelessly to offer a warm and inviting space, a space that is we all know the most inviting pub, with amazing staff who have so much respect for Dean.
I have come to realise that it is not just Dean that is the centre of my life, it is that black and white building on the corner of Stanhope Street, with its many customers and visitors and friends, and Dean is the Spirit of that pub, a fair and kind man, a loyal friend someone that people trust.
So as we celebrate the milestone that is his 60th, for me as his husband, I just wanted to pay tribute to my anchor, to someone I love and respect far more than perhaps I demonstrate.
Happy Birthday Dean with love from Mark, your staff and your many friends and customers ❤️
