The Gregson Centre

The Gregson Centre Lancaster's only community led arts & community centre and cafe bar. Open 7 days a week from 10am - 11pm (sometimes a little later) We make that happen.

Community Led - Community Owned
In a world that seems increasingly disconnected, where more of us feel isolated and where community can seem in decline, the Gregson is a beacon of hope. Our mission is for people to be in the driving seat of their community events and cultural experiences. We believe it is critical that our community has a place to come together. Our spaces play a crucial role in o

ur city’s cultural ecology. It is everyone’s right to create and take part in community life and culture, in all its diversity. We are a meeting place of people, ages and cultures. We’re a place to create, to think, to drink and to dance. We’re not dedicated to one artform, and believe our community knows what is relevant to them. Our spaces are currently home to 50 regular groups and a range of cultural and community events and celebrations

At the heart of the Gregson is Lancaster’s only community run bar and cafe. It’s a far cry from what you’d find in most cultural buildings. It is honest and warm hearted and a social hub in its own right. The Gregson was built in 1889, with donations in memory of former city Mayor, Henry Gregson. For the last forty years our charity, the Gregson Community Association, has been the building’s custodians. We’ve been through a difficult time since lockdown, but local people once again saved the Gregson from closure and our charity now manages the building directly. All the income we make is invested back into the centre and the community. Beyond our walls, our charity supports three sub-groups who work to make community life better. Friends of Miss Whalley’s Field maintain the ‘Gregson’s Garden’, a once disused site which has been transformed into a wonderful urban green space. The Gregson Festival Group deliver community events including an annual firework display and bonfire. And The Highfield Recreation Ground, where local people restored a mainly derelict sports facility to provide an essential outdoor community space. The Gregson exists because of our community’s tenacity and strength. We have ambitious volunteers, members, trustees, and staff, but face challenges within the current climate, and after covid, we’re fragile. With your support, we can make the Gregson work. To close this national volunteers week, we would just like to ✨ dazzle you with some stats ✨

👥Around 200 volunteers give their time to the Gregson

👋People are always offering their support, with a staggering 7 new volunteers joining in May alone!

⏳Together we estimate that Volunteers give over 500 hours a month of their time and enthusiasm in helping the Gregson thrive.

We're so thrilled to have a community of committed people supporting us every day! As one of our volunteers puts it: “I feel very valued as a volunteer and love the feeling of being part of the Gregson family.”

So thank you to all our volunteers for making our little part of Lancaster such a vibrant and inclusive place to be 💜

Volunteers make LANCASTER go round! 🫶🤝

It's not just our own Volunteers we need to celebrate this week - we often work in partnership with fantastic local organisations too!

Just this recently we have loved working with:

🌍 RAIS Lancaster for our Beats without Borders nights

🌱 Positive Futures on a Support to Stop Smoking project (keep an eye out for our drop-in clinic Wednesday 17th June, 7-8pm!)

🥚 eggcup for their weekly food club

Joining forces with organisations that are strongly volunteer focused fits perfectly with the Gregson ethos, and brings a larger awareness to our local community. We love it, thanks for supporting!

This is going to be a belter!

Kedu is a 6 piece group formed in London that combines West African music with Jazz.

Drawing influence from Ghanaian highlife, Mandé griots and rumba, this group fuses intensive rhythms and grooves with melodic storytelling and improvisation. Led by Congolese Guitarist and vocalist Daniel Ndaty and percussionist Paddy Davies.

They're here Friday 19th June - tickets on our website!

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.
