It’s officially rosé season 🩷☀️

Our rosé buyer Peter Doherty is here to demystify some of the biggest rosé myths - and help you discover your next favourite bottle.

🍇 Misconception #1: “The paler the rosé, the better it is”
Not necessarily. Winemakers can filter rosé to achieve a paler colour, but sometimes that also strips away some of the flavour. A little more depth in colour can often mean more character - think Spanish rosado styles.

🌸 Misconception #2: “All pale rosés are dry”
Colour doesn’t determine sweetness. A pale rosé can still have residual sugar, depending on how the wine is made.

🌍 Misconception #3: “Provence is the only place for great pale rosé”
Amazing rosés are made all across the Mediterranean. Don’t be afraid to explore beyond Provence. For example, we have a delicious Xinomavro rosé from Theopetra Estate - dry, crisp, and packed with fruit!

Tell us in the comments - what’s your go-to rosé style? 🤩

Thinking about buying Bordeaux En Primeur this year?

Our Buying Director, Robert Mathias MW , shares his top advice for navigating this year’s Bordeaux EP campaign:

📑 Read the critics’ notes, and the vintage report on our website
🍷 Focus on a few special bottles - consider larger formats like magnums or double magnums

A great bottle of Bordeaux is more than just a purchase - it’s something to cellar, revisit, and celebrate with years down the line. In 10 or 20 years’ time, you’ll thank yourself when you open a beautifully mature bottle for a special occasion.

Spring Sancerre 🌿

The top terroirs in Sancerre deliver the thrill and quality we demand in great premier cru Burgundy at a fraction of the price, and the communal blends are unquestionably a sweet spot for price and quality in the fine wine world.

Here at Lay & Wheeler we believe Sancerre is far better with a little time in bottle, and we purposefully hold the wines back. So while other merchants will be offering 2025s this summer, we’re presenting a list that spans 2022-23-24 from six top-class growers.

These wines have a remarkable yet underappreciated ability to age.
