❤️ I initially wrote this for some of our students who did not attend classes this week because they were fearful after the rally in Glasgow last week .. so this is for anyone else who has been feeling a bit fearful over the past week…
Today I attended Glasgow’s anti-racism rally, and I was proud to see a number of fellow dancers there too. 🙌🏼
Among the 3,000+ peaceful protesters were around 30 pathetic agitators, corralled into a corner wearing balaclavas, making N**i salutes, throwing projectiles into the crowd, and attempting to intimidate people by taking photos and threatening to post them online.
I hope the wee punk got my good side. 📱😂
Why am I sharing this?
Because I want everyone to know that Glasgow will NOT tolerate a descent into hatred driven by a small minority of people who aren’t even brave enough to show their faces.
Glasgow is a welcoming, diverse and open-minded city. It’s a place where people from all backgrounds live, work, dance and build friendships together. The overwhelming majority of people here believe in treating others with dignity and respect.
As a dance community, we may come from different countries, cultures, faiths and backgrounds, but our shared humanity will always be greater than the things that divide us.
Please don’t let a few bullies intimidate you or stop you from living your life.
❤️ We’ve got your back.
*For anyone feeling nervous about travelling into classes or socials here are some practical ways I believe we can support one another 😗
🚶 Meeting at a train, subway or bus station and walking to class / events together or even travelling in together
🚗 Carpooling or sharing lifts
👯 Arranging to attend classes and socials with friends
📱 Checking in on members who may be feeling isolated
🤗 Making sure nobody feels they have to attend alone
Sometimes knowing that a friendly face is waiting for you can make all the difference.
These are just a few things that popped into my head as I sought to reassure those who missed out this week.
I’m sure that -as a community- we can offer support to those who are understandably a bit nervous just now 💪🏼
If you’re feeling vulnerable, worried or unsure, *please reach out* to your dance friends , teachers - *don’t suffer in silence* .
As always we do not tolerate bullying, harassment or discrimination of any kind—on or off the dance floor , in person or online .
Don’t let fear win. Don’t let the bullies shrink your world. We got this ! 💪🏻💖
With love and solidarity,
