Progress at the Kingfisher Nature Reserve Café So Far!

It’s all coming together at Wicken. A proper café serving proper food, along with tasting evenings and special events, is on the way.

We’re also delighted to see local businesses working together and supporting one another. It’s fantastic to see the village becoming busier, with more reasons for people to visit, stay longer, and enjoy everything Wicken has to offer.

Jamie’s comment at the end is so northern!!!

Jonny’s History Lesson: Spinney Abbey

Jonny explores the rich history of Spinney Abbey, one of Cambridgeshire’s hidden historic gems.

Founded as an Augustinian priory in the early 13th century, Spinney Abbey occupied a rare patch of higher ground on the edge of the Fens. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536, the site passed into private ownership and evolved into the historic home that stands today.

The Abbey also has links to Richard Cromwell, son of Oliver Cromwell, who spent part of his retirement here. Local tradition even holds that King Charles II paid a visit in 1671.

From medieval monks to Cromwell connections, Spinney Abbey’s story spans centuries of English history.

And yes, we’ve got Jonny mic’d up for this one.

Jamie’s stripping away all the shields and going bare.

This is Part 1 of 2.

There are almost tears in this one as he talks about the struggles of the maid’s head, going from being a chef to a business owner!!!

Part 2 dives into his childhood—the experiences that shaped him and the driving force behind everything he’s become.

The walls are coming down. The truth is finally surfacing.

At The Maids Head, our aim is simple: to be a genuine village pub at the heart of the community.

We focus on delivering consistency, a welcoming atmosphere, great food, exciting specials, and live music, while staying true to what matters most — being a great village pub.

As Jamie often says, we’ll never satisfy everyone, because everyone has different tastes, styles, and opinions on how a pub should be run. What we can promise is that we’ll continue working hard to create a place where people can come together, enjoy themselves, and feel at home.

What many people don’t see is that a pub isn’t a hobby — it’s a lifestyle. For one person to be driving the whole operation seven days a week, keeping standards high and the doors open, is not far from a miracle. The dedication, hard work, and sacrifices behind the scenes are immense.

Meet one of our villagers, Rowena, who has watched and experienced the journey of the pub from the very beginning and has seen how it has grown into the community hub it is today.
