A friend treated us to some great drams last night. A couple were blasts from the pasts. The others all new to me.
We started with the discontinued Edinburgh themed blend EH10. High malt content from MacDonald & Muir, then owners of Glenmorangie and Glen Moray. Reminiscent of Ballie Nicol Jarvie, another pedigree bottling of theirs.
Next we had a great example of Mortlach from a Bourbon cask, for some this wood for one of Dufftown’s finest isn’t a case of the band playing acoustic, rather using sherry wood is the group going electric.
After this I was disappointed I didn’t recognise the long closed wonder that is North of Scotland grain. This bottling’s sub 40% strength should have been a give away on the palate and nose. BTW it’s neither in Speyside nor the north of Scotland.
To follow was the star of the show with all but one of us choosing it as our favourite, appropriately as it’s our host’s favourite wh**ky : a wonderful Bourbon cask of Longmorn from Morrisons, the bottlers not the supermarket!
Sticking with Speyside another Bourboned beauty - Linkwood, like the Mortlach Bottled by Mr Armstrong.
Lastly time for Islay and Sherry - a monster of a sherried Caol Ila from Mythical Beasts. It actually took me out of my comfort zone but most of the others enjoyed the interplay between peat and cask.
The next two tastings are sold out but there are spaces at the following events : both 5 dram £30 tastings on Sundays at 3pm : 25.10.26 at Laurie, EH3 9JG £30 and 29.11.26 at Du Vin Bouchers, Linlithgow Jolly Toper Wh**ky Tasting - Du Vin Bouchers
